League Cup Quarter Final – Whitehill Welfare v Broxburn Athletic – 20/05/2022

Broxburn travelled to Ferguson Park in Rosewell for their much anticipated League Cup quarter final. The visitors made 3 changes from last weeks win against Sauchie, Donoghue replacing Wallace in goal, Harrison for Murray and the injured Ross Nimmo being replaced by Binnie.

The home side made 2 changes from last Saturday’s loss at Inverkeithing, Burrows and Walker coming in for Wilson and Thomson.

In the 2nd minute an excellent run by ex Brox player Ireland beating Newall all ends up but he couldn’t find a team mate with his cross. Seconds later and Weir was played clean through but was denied by a brilliant save from Donoghue.

Broxburn responded well in 5 minutes from a Brass head flick Gillen cracked a rasping drive off the underside of the bar.

The Brox continued to go forward Brass again controlling well finding Donaldson who beat 2 defenders before feeding the ball to Barker whose cross was blocked for a corner. Greenhill delivered the corner deep to the back post Donaldson won the header and headed back across goal but there were no takers in stripes.

Thomson came on for the hosts in 10 minutes for the injured Walker.

In 15 minutes Whitehill had another glorious chance Newall mis-controlled the ball leaving Burrows in the clear, Newall clearly pulled Burrows jersey which the referee did not see which was enough distraction to allow Donoghue to collect the ball.

From a Nicol cross Brass won the header but it deflected out for a corner. A nice short corner routine between Greenhill, Binnie and Nicol saw the latter shoot but too far to the right of the goal.

Harrison was booked in 26 minutes for kicking the ball away/dissent. From the free kick McKinlay put over a great ball which was flicked on and just out of reach of Shyngle.

Whitehill continued to press Weir this time on a great run down the left beating 2 defenders but his cut back couldn’t find a colleague.

Ireland was next to set off on a run down the left beating 3 defenders but was eventually crowded out.

With the hosts in the ascendancy they won a penalty Weir having been brought down at the edge of the box on the left. Connor took the penalty poorly straight at Donoghue who pulled off the save.

Broxburn ended the half a little better an intelligent ball from Greenhill down the right found Gillen his cross was flicked on towards goal by Barker but was cleared. Right on half time Greenhill stuck a sweet shot from 25 yards out which Dibaga had to save.

Half Time: Whitehill Welfare 0 – 0 Broxburn Athletic

In 53 minutes Brass played the ball wide to Newall who fired in a good cross which Dibaga in the home goal came out to claim with Binnie ready to pounce.

Greenhill was booked for handball a minute later which didn’t look intentional. Burrows fired the resultant free kick wide.

Broxburn were doing a little better from open play and from a good deep Newall cross Barker made a desperate lunge at the ball but just couldn’t direct on target.

In 57 minutes Broxburn had a succession of corners Harrison heading down towards goal but blocked by Miller. Dibaga then had to tip Greenhill’s next kick over his bar.

On the hour a Greenhill foul saw him receive a second yellow and then a red card for his second bookable offence.

In the following minute O’Neill was booked after a heavy challenge on Donaldson.

Brass was then booked for a foul on Miller.

The game was now being perpetuated by a lot of fouls McKinlay receiving a yellow card for a foul on Newall in 68 minutes.

In 71 minutes O’Neill got in a shot on goal which deflected through to Donoghue.

Broxburn then created a real opportunity a minute later a Binnie cross was blocked breaking to Brass who turned and hit a fierce shot which Dibaga did well to beat clear, Donaldson then appeared to be impeded going for the loose ball but incredibly was booked for diving, no penalty awarded.

Within a minute Donaldson committed a foul and was promptly shown a second yellow and a red card reducing the visitors to 9 men.

Whitehill almost took the lead in 74 minutes McKinlay hit the bar from 25 yards with the Brox defence scrambling clear.

In 75 minutes Cowley replaced Binnie. Wilson replaced Thomson for Whitehill.

A further blow for Broxburn in 87 minutes Dan Nimmo picking up an injury Beagley coming on.

Broxburn had a couple of break aways in injury time Brass prominent couldn’t find Beagley on the first occasion but did on the second with the youngsters shot being blocked.

Full Time: Whitehill Welfare 0 – 0 Broxburn Athletic

Into extra time with another yellow card brandished appearing to be Burrows of Whitehill. Weir then had a great shooting opportunity but shot wildly over.

The deadlock was broken in 94 minutes with the home sides numerical advantage paying off, Mendes slipping the ball to Burrows back to Ireland whose deep cross was met by WEIR who slid the ball past Donoghue.

In 96 minutes Burrows was replaced by Burns.

McKinlay was then sent clear but took a terrible touch allowing Donoghue to collect.

Beagley then got a shot on target for the Brox forcing a save from Dibaga.

Extra Time Half Time: Whitehill Welfare 1 – 0 Broxburn Athletic

Into the second period of extra time with the home side seeming quite happy to sit on their lead.

Broxburn sent Harrison forward into the attack. Wilson replaced McKinlay.

Then a bizarre mistake from Dibaga as he attempted to clear the ball bobbled in front of him, his attempted clearance struck BRASS on the head and into the net.

Binnie who had been subbed was booked from the bench!

Once again tempers became frayed Mendes and Newall booked as a melee broke out.

In 119 minutes a long throw from the right from Miller broke to Mendes whose overhead kick went wide.

Then with penalties beckoning Miller swung in a cross from the left which SHYNGLE met first time and his shot beat Donoghue and into the net.

Miller was booked for running away with the ball.

In injury time Barker was sent off for dissent and a Whitehill player carried off leaving the teams 10 v 8 as the final whistle blew.
