Jeanfield Swifts v Broxburn Athletic – 08/09/2021
On a beautiful night for football at the Riverside Stadium in Perth, Broxburn travelled to face Jeanfield Swifts who have had an indifferent start to their league campaign. Broxburn made 2 changes to the side who lost at Dunbar in the Scottish Cup, Newall and Binnie replaced with Donaldson and Ireland.
In an explosive start to the game in the first minute Allum was fouled by Dolzanski just outside the box to the right. Greenhill touched the ball off to ROSS who fired a shot low and hard and past keeper Mitchell and into the net.
The home side responded with some sharp incisive passing ending with Fergus hitting a great strike from 30 yards just over the bar.
Jeanfield were moving forward with pace and purpose and were almost level in 3 minutes Fergus played the ball neatly to Scott Smith who hit a left foot shot just wide of the right post.
The equaliser duly came a minute later with Broxburn having no answer to the home sides movement and passing, STRUTHERS applied a great finish from the edge of the box low past Wallace’s right hand.
Jeanfield continued to assert Fergus cut the ball back to Scott Smith who hit a shot just over the bar.
In 8 minutes a rash challenge from Wright on Struthers gave the home side another opportunity. From the free kick McLaren struck the ball well it took a deflection off the wall which Wallace did well to get a hand to and palm clear.
Broxburn responded Cowley sending Ross away down the right his cross being well blocked and defended by Whitehead.
In 11 minutes Gillen put over a fine cross from the right with Allum getting on the end of it but couldn’t get enough purchase on his header to make it count.
In 14 minutes Ross sent over a great cross from the right the ball broke to TAIT at the edge of the box and he volleyed brilliantly over Mitchell.
Jeanfield then took back control but despite a lot of possession couldn’t fashion a clear chance as Broxburn steadied in defence.
In 27 minutes a nice move between Ross and Ireland with the latter’s cross finding Allum whose shot was well blocked by the home defender. Wright was booked for the visitors in 28 minutes.
The Brox were starting to ask questions of the Jeanfield defence, another deep Ireland cross from the right had Reid scrambling to prevent Tait doubling his personal goal tally for the night. From the corner Ross found Allum at the front post his header was brilliantly saved by Mitchell but WRIGHT was quick to react to the loose ball and headed home. Time 28 minutes.
In 33 minutes the home defence were all at sea once again exposed down the right Allum managed to find TAIT on the left and his shot despite being partially blocked found the net.
The Brox weren’t finished yet in 35 minutes ALLUM opportunistically scored a fifth goal, he saw Mitchell off his line and lashed the ball over his head from the halfway line for a goal of the season contender without doubt.
In 45 minutes it was almost six again from the right side Allum flicked the ball wide with Tait oggling a first half hat trick Reid managed to scramble the ball away before the Spartans man could strike.
In first half injury time McLaren sent in a good shot which just curled wide.

Barker replaced Cowley for Broxburn at half time.
In 49 minutes Tait made good ground down the left and won a corner. Ross’s corner was cleared. In 50 minutes Allum was brought down heavily by Donald, Ross took the free kick which nothing came of other than a booking for Ross for a foul on Donald.
Greenhill followed him into the book in 51 minutes.
In 55 minutes McLaren got the better of Gillen on the left and his cross was well blocked by Wright.
In 56 minutes in a collision between Ross and Donald, the home defender had blood on his face which was being claimed had been done by an elbow. The referee and lineman thought otherwise with no action taken after consultation.
In 58 minutes Jeanfield made 3 changes Scott, Dodd, Simpson replacing McLaren, Scott Smith and Donald.
Just following the substitutions Ross was injured going down heavily but the referee saw nothing amiss despite protests from the visitors.
In 63 minutes McLeish was replaced by Mark Smith.
Jeanfield were controlling possession, Broxburn content to defend what they had. In 66 minutes Struthers played the ball back on the left to Reid who fired a shot just over the bar. Stewart was then booked for the home side.
In 67 minutes Ireland played an intelligent pass out to Tait who curled his shot over. Harrison was booked then Brass replaced Tait shortly after.
Wright once again excelled with another great block on a Stewart shot.
In 75 minutes Newall replaced the injured Ireland. Brass was booked.
The home side forced a couple of corners on the trot and from the second one they won a penalty which wasn’t entirely clear the reason for the award. SCOTT dispatched the ball past Wallace from the spot.
Jeanfield weren’t far off getting another goal back in 82 minutes Struthers finding Mark Smith in the middle of the goal mouth but he headed wide.
In 82 minutes Barker was booked. Four minutes later Hutchison replaced Allum.
The Brox managed to see the game out for a great 3 points following a first half blitz of goals which will long be remembered to cement them firmly in third spot in the league. Another away trip awaits at the weekend at Inverkeithing Hillend Swifts.
