We kicked off our Lowland league season with an away trip to Celtic B at the Excelsior Stadium.

Celtic B are in their traditional kits. Green and White hooped shirts with white shorts and socks. Visitors Broxburn Athletic are in their changed all navy-blue strips. Broxburn Athletic make one change from the team that defeated Bo’ness Athletic 5-2 last weekend. In comes Robbie Hamilton to replace Louis Kennedy.

With only a minute on the clock, Broxburn keeper Mikey Andrews comes of his line to clear the ball but gifts it right to Rhys Dargie, but the Celtic winger shoots wide.

On eight minutes, Celtic midfielder Samuel Isiguzo is booked for a foul on Matty McDonald in the middle of the park.

On eleven minutes, Marcus Lavery plays a good through ball for the advanced Andy Rodden. The Broxburn left back is conceded for a corner by Celtic B captain Mitchell Robertson. GOAL! Broxburn take the lead! A deep corner by Andy Rodden is half cleared by Celtic, only as far as Jon Robertson whose header finds the left corner.

 GOAL! Celtic B equalise two minutes later. Francis Turley finds Rhys Dargie who drives from the right past numerous Broxburn players before finding the right corner with his shot.

 On seventeen minutes, Broxburn winger Jamie Docherty’s shot is saved by Celtic B keeper Marcus Gill.

Celtic B winger Thomas Hatton is free on the left and his low cross is half cleared by Andy Rodden. The ball falls for Sean Cardle whose effort is over the bar for the hosts.

On twenty minutes, Broxburn come close from a good training ground move. Andy Rodden is over the free kick and plays a short pass to Scott McRory Irving who plays in Robbie Hamilton. Hamilton’s shot is saved by Celtic keeper Marcus Gill. On 22 minutes, Scott McRory Irving’s long ball over finds Jon Robertson on the right, but Robbo’s shot is over the bar.

Since the Celtic B equalizer, The Wee Hoops have dominated possession and look a huge threat going forward. Broxburn look to have lost a bit of their confidence.

We have a stoppage in play on twenty-eight minutes as Emmanuel Obiwide and Marcus Lavery collide heads unintentionally. Fortunately, both players can continue, but Broxburn are down to ten men as Marcus Lavery is cut open.

GOAL! Celtic B punish ten men Broxburn and take the lead. Sean McCardle feeds in Rhys Dargie who slots his shot into the right corner leaving Mikey Andrews no chance.

 On thirty-three minutes, Rhys Dargie is in again on the right and on a Hattrick, but his effort hits the side netting. On thirty-eight minutes, Celtic’s Sean McCardle takes a ball down with a great first touch, but his shot is high and wide.

Chance for Broxburn on forty-three minutes. Jon Robertson feeds in Robbie Hamilton, whose shot is just wide of the left-hand post. The resulting corner taken by Andy Rodden is bread and butter for Celtic B keeper Marcus Gill who collects.

On forty-four minutes, an Emmanuel Obidwe shot is saved by the feet of Broxburn keeper Mikey Andrews.

HALF TIME (2-1 Celtic B)

Celtic B make a change at the half time break. Filip Skorb replaces Emmanuel Obidwe.

Celtic’s have the ball in the back of the net through a Hayden Borland header but its ruled offside by the linesman. On fifty-one minutes, it is worked to Rhys Dargie whose shot is over the bar.

GOAL! Celtic add a third. A good through ball by Sean McCardle finds Rhys Dargie whose shot is saved by Mikey Andrews and hits of Andy Rodden and into his own net. Very unfortunate for the Broxburn left back.

GOAL! Broxburn are back in the game. A Broxburn cross is cleared by Celtic but referee Daly points for a free kick. Up steps Robbie Hamilton whose effort flies into the left corner.

 On seventy-eight minutes, Broxburn have another dangerous free kick, Hamilton takes it again but this time it’s over the bar.

On eighty-three minutes, Thomas Hatton’s corner hits the post, but Broxburn get the rebound clear.

Broxburn are throwing everything for an equaliser. A long ball forward looks to be landing right Infront of Chris O’Kane, but Celtic B skipper Mitchell Robertson makes a great block.

Celtic B catch Broxburn on the break. Thomas Hatton is free on the right and squares it for Francis Turley whose shot is well blocked by Mikey Andrews.

Broxburn push everyone forward again. Deep into injury time Chris O’ Kane goes down in the box, but the referee is having none of it.

Lots of positives to take tonight. Missing a few vital players tonight also. I’m convinced we have a lot to be excited about this season.

Broxburn Athletic travelled to Newton Park on Saturday for our sixth pre-season friendly against Bo’ness Athletic. 

Bo’ness Athletic are in all blue kits, while Broxburn are in their changed kits of gold and black shirts, black shorts and gold and black socks. Broxburn Athletic make four changes to the team that defeated Drumchapel last Tuesday night. In comes Marcus Lavery, Matty McDonald, Louis Kennedy and Chris O’Kane. They replace Greg Page, Jack Thomson, Shaun Brown and Kyle Bell.

There was no Bo’ness team sheet today, but there were starts for ex Broxburn midfielder James Russell and last season’s loanee Godwin-Kangni-Soukpe.

GOAL! Bo’ness take an early lead. Jack Sharples heads home at the back post from a corner.

 On fourteen minutes, Louis Kennedy cuts inside and shoots over the bar.

 GOAL! Broxburn equalise! A long goal kick from Broxburn keeper Michael Andrews finds Chris O’ Kane who wins the header and nods on to Scott McRory Irving. The Broxburn midfielder plays a ball forward and Ewan MacPherson gets to the ball first before the Bo’ness keeper, takes it round him and scores into an empty net. 1-1 against the run of play.

 On nineteen minutes, Sam Gormley plays a long ball forward that finds Louis Kennedy wide right. The winger finds Scott McRory Irving whose  deep cross is attacked by Chris O’ Kane, but the Bo’ness number two gets his head on the ball first forcing it for a Broxburn corner. On twenty-two minutes. A deep Andy Rodden cross finds Ewan MacPherson whose header is cleared by Bo’ness.

 GOAL! Broxburn have the lead. Ewan MacPherson pace gets him through on goal and his shot is saved. It comes back to MacPherson who squares it for Jamie Docherty who scores into an empty net.

 On forty-four minutes. Louis Kennedy flies down the right and eventually works it to Jamie Docherty on the left.  The Broxburn winger’s shot is blocked by the sliding Bo’ness  defender.

 

HALF TIME (3-2 Broxburn Athletic)

 Broxburn make a treble change at half time. On comes Errol Douglas, Luke Morris & Shaun brown who replace Ewan MacPherson, Chris O’ Kane and Jamie Docherty.

Broxburn have a penalty. With Errol Douglas first touch, he lays it for the Broxburn trialist who is brought down in the box for a penalty. GOAL! With his second touch, Douglas converts the penalty into the left corner.

 A shot by the Bo’ness number ten is saved by Broxburn Keeper Michael Andrews on fifty-four minutes.  

 On the hour mark, Ex Broxburn midfielder James Russell plays a teasing cross that finds the head of the Bo’ness number fifteen, but Broxburn keeper Andrews saves.

 Broxburn make a double change on 61 minutes, Jack Thomson & Robbie Hamilton replace Louis Kennedy and Marcus Lavery.

On sixty three minutes, a free kick from Bo’ness number thirty-three is saved by Michael Andrews.

 GOAL! Broxburn have a fifth goal. Shaun Brown finds Robbie Hamilton in the box who side foots his effort over the Bo’ness keeper and into the net.

Fantastic play by Scott McRory Irving on sixty-five minutes. Takes the ball down out the sky with a great first touch and leaves the Bo’ness midfielder for dead with a great turn. A low Robbie Hamilton shot from distance is saved by the Bo’ness keeper on sixty-six minutes. On seventy minutes, Hamilton again has another shot that has a lot of power, its palmed wide by the Bo’ness keeper on seventy-one minutes.

Broxburn started the slower of the two teams. But grew into the game. Second half was impressive from the boys. We now look forward to our last pre-season game against Livingston on Tuesday night before our Lowland League opener against Celtic B on Friday evening.

We return to Albyn Park on Tuesday night for the visit of West of Scotland Premier League side Drumchapel United.

Broxburn are intheir traditional kits, red and white strips, white strips and red and white socks. Visitors Drumchapel United are in black and white strips with black shorts and socks. Broxburn make three changes to last weeks 4-1 win over Stirling Albion. In comes new summer signing Mikey Andrews in goals, Scott McRory Irving & Andy Rodden. They replace Bob Watt, Marcus Lavery & Chris O’ Kane.

Broxburn start the game the better of the two sides. With only a minute on the clock, Andy Rodden delivers a decent ball into the box, that finds Scott McRory Irving wide right, who is ruled offside before he shoots over the bar. On eight minutes, Greg Page plays a long ball from centre back to the feet of Jamie Docherty, the new Broxburn signing turns and his shot deflects for a corner to the hosts. The resulting corner taken by Jamie Docherty is cleared by Drumchapel.

On thirteen minutes, new Drumchapel signing Carlo Monti’s deep cross from the right is easily collected by Broxburn goalkeeper Michael Andrews. With hardly any Drumchapel players attacking the ball.

On seventeen minutes, Jamie Docherty finds Shaun Brown who is fouled on the edge of the box. GOAL! Broxburn take the lead! From the resulting free kick, Andy Rodden’s ball into the box is converted into the back of the net from close range by Jon Robertson

 On twenty-four minutes, Drumchapel have another half chance. A cross from the right by Carlo Monti finds David Hopkirk wide right. He uses his strength before getting his cross away in the direction of Daniel Finnigan, but Broxburn defender Jack Thomson gets a tow in to divert it for a corner. Carlo Monti’s resulting corner finds Martin McNiff whose header hits the bar and Broxburn get the rebound clear. On twe

 

nty-eight minutes, Drumchapel create their first big two chances of the match in quick succession. Firstly, Monti plays in Kieran Moore who beats the offside trap, with just Broxburn keeper to beat, but Andrews does well to come out and save with his feet. The rebound is only cleared as far as Carlo Monti who finds Daniel Finnigan, whose shot is tipped round the post by Andrews for another corner.

On thirty-one minutes, a Drumchapel free kick by Carlo Monti is powerful and awkward from distance, but again keeper Andrews makes a good save.

GOAL! A well worked goal makes it 2-0 to the hosts. Scott McRory Irving finds Sam Gormley wide right, he drives forward before picking out Jamie Docherty with a good pass. Docherty makes no mistake and drills his effort low into the net, leaving Drumchapel keeper Matthew Kerr no chance.

First in the book is Broxburn’s Jon Robertson whose late challenge on Drumchapel’s Kieran Moore on thirty-nine minutes.

On forty-one minutes, a shot from distance by Drumchapel’s Kieran Moore is saved by Michael Andrews. A minute later, Drumchapel’s Lewis McTaggart does well to win the ball high up the park and lay it off for Daniel Finnigan whose shot is pushed wide by Broxburn keeper Michael Andrews. Andrews makes another great block from David Hopkirk on forty-three minutes.

HALF TIME (2-1 Broxburn)

 On forty-six minutes, a deep corner by Andy Rodden from the right finds Centre back Greg Page whose shot hits the side netting. A minute later, a cross by Broxburn’s Jamie Docherty from the right is just behind the onrushing Ewan MacPherson. On fifty four minutes, Ewan MacPherson plays in Shaun Brown, whose shot is blocked by Drumchapel defender Connor Greene with a sliding tackle.

Broxburn make four changes on fifty-nine minutes. On comes, Errol Douglas, Louis Kennedy, Luke Morris and Marcus Lavery who replace Andy Rodden, Shaun Brown, Ewan MacPherson & Jack Thomson. On sixty-four minutes, Chris O’ Kane replaces Kyle Bell.

GOAL! Broxburn have a third goal! Scott McRory Irving picks out Marcus Lavery in space on the left. His deep cross finds Chris O’ Kane unmarked, and his volley finds the left corner from close range.

 Broxburn make another change on seventy-two minutes. Matty McDonald replaces Jon Robertson. On seventy-seven minutes, a long ball is headered on by Errol Douglas in the direction of Louis Kennedy, but Drumchapel goalkeeper Matthew Kerr gets to the ball first.

GOAL! Drumchapel pull one back on eighty-nine minutes. Kieran Moore feeds in David Hopkirk who slots passed Mikey Andrews to make the scoreline 3-2.

More minutes in legs for the boys and a good performance against a good well drilled Drumchapel side. We wish them all the best for their West of Scotland Premier Division campaign.

It was back to Albyn Park on Tuesday evening, as we take on Scottish League two side Stirling Albion in our fourth preseason friendly.

Broxburn Athletic are in their changed kits of all navy blue, while the visitors Stirling Albion are in all white. Broxburn make three changes to the team that defeated Bathgate last Saturday 2-0. In comes Ewan MacPherson, Jack Thomson & Marcus Lavery, who replace Errol Douglas, Matty McDonald & Andy Rodden.

Broxburn created their first chance on 5 minutes. Brilliant play by Shaun Brown who plays a great back heel to Kyle Bell. Bell takes on the full back before finding Shaun Brown in a dangerous position. Brown’s shot is blocked and falls favorably for striker Ewan MacPherson, but the striker is ruled offside. On 8 minutes, Jamie Docherty shot is over the bar from the right.

Broxburn are in goal again on 15 minutes. Kyle Bell fly’s down the left and finds Shaun Brown, but the Broxburn winger doesn’t connect with the ball and Stirling get it clear. On 16 minutes, Shaun Brown finds Chris O’ Kane in space but his shot is saved by the Stirling keeper.
