 Broxburn were looking to get back on track at the Albyn after 2 league losses in a row to Blackburn United and Linlithgow Rose respectively with Hill Of Beath Hawthorn as visitors.

There were 3 changes in the starting line up R.Nimmo, Downie and Clark replacing Wright, Douglas and G. Donaldson.

Hill of Beath hadn’t been in action since winning 2-1 at Dundonald Bluebell on 3rd December last year.

Conditions were difficult with wind and rain greeting the players. Both teams struggled to string anything together in the opening stages.

In the 5th minute Gillen was fouled by Baur around 22 yards from goal on the right. R.Nimmo took the kick which was dangerous and well punched clear by visiting keeper Hall.

Two minutes later and Payne did well for the Haws on the left getting to the bye line but his attempted cutback was well defended by B.Donaldson. From the corner taken by Kellichan, Brass headed clear for the Brox.

In 21 minutes the first decent opening fell to Broxburn Orru did well down the left and slipped the ball to Downie who got a shot off which was blocked, rebounded to Gillen who shot high and wide to the left.

There was a foul on Clark in 23 minutes 25 yards from goal on the left which Greenhill took the free kick from with Fleming heading out for a corner. Greenhill took the corner which was partially cleared to Harrison who tried an overhead kick but his effort went well over the bar.

Broxburn continued to make half chances from a long McConnelll throw Brass found Gillen but his shot was high and wide.

Greenhill was booked on the half hour.

In 33 minutes a high ball in from Leishman in the conditions was a tricky one for Blair who kept his eye on the ball and claimed well.

Then in Broxburn’s next attack the best chance of the game Orru again was prominent playing in a great cross from the left Downie then pushed the ball out to R.Nimmo who with the goal at his mercy from the right sliced his shot wide.

The visitors then fashioned their own chance with Payne seemingly set to score B.Donaldson put in a great tackle to prevent what seemed a certain goal.

Right on half time Brass got in the clear on the half way line made good ground before passing to Downie but his shot was blocked and cleared.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 0– 0 Hill Of Beath Hawthorn

In 46 minutes Gillen was fouled on the right R.Nimmo took the free kick but his kick was very deep which Clark couldn’t make anything of.

Adamson played a good ball into the box but Blair was alert to the danger and dived to save.

In 49 minutes the deadlock was broken Brass sent R.Nimmo awy on the right, Brass advanced into the penalty area where R.Nimmo found him again BRASS steadied himself and fired low into the net past Hall.

Three minutes later and a good deep cross from R.Nimmo from the right B.Donaldson won his header at the back post but couldn’t direct his effort on target.

The Brox almost made in two on 55 minutes Downie played through but his shot was well saved by Hall. Greenhill’s resulting corner blew out of play over the bar.

In 59 minutes the visitors went close Galloway hitting a left foot shot which only just went past the right hand post.

Douglas replaced Downie on the hour.

Fleming had to leave the field for some attention.

In 62 minutes Payne did well down the left to win a corner. ADAMSON took the corner which was caught by the wind and swirled into the net despite Blair’s best efforts to keep it out. Time 63 minutes.

The visitors were having their best spell Adamson had another opportunity from a corner which he played in but this time B.Donaldson cleared.

Leishman was booked for a foul on Orru in 65 minutes.

In 72 minutes Greenhill played a lovely down the wing for R.Nimmo to chase where he won a corner. Greenhill took the kick which broke to Brass at the back post but he curled his effort wide.

The Brox took the lead for a second time in 75 minutes Greenhill and Orru combined to win a corner. Greenhill’s delivery was once again excellent finding the head of B.DONALDSON who headed into the net off the right hand post.

In 77 minutes Chalmers replaced Fleming for Hill Of Beath and 5 minutes later Payne went off with Tosh coming on.

In 84 minutes Douglas won a corner out of nothing chasing what looked a lost cause. Greenhill took the kick this time finding BRASS rising high at the back post to head Broxburn 3-1 ahead.

Wright had to replace the injured Gillen in 87 minutes.

In injury time Broxburn should have increased their lead R.Nimmo being played through his shot was well saved by Hall Douglas was first to the rebound got round the keeper but his shot was brilliantly defended on the line. Kellichan was then booked for Hill of Beath.

Baur was also booked in the game for Hill Of Beath.

Broxburn went first footing up to neighbours Blackburn United for their first game of 2023.

Broxburn made 3 changes from the side which had lost at home to Linlithgow Rose G.Donaldson, McConnell and Henderson replaced Sayers, Jeffries and Downie.

Broxburn had the wind at their backs in the 1st half but in the early stages of the game it was scrappy stuff as both teams acclimatised to the conditions.

With the ball holding up in the wind Wright attempted to head back to keeper Blair but Heath beat the keeper to the ball resulting in a collision and a penalty awarded. SAMPSON converted the penalty sending Blair the wrong way. Time 6 minutes.

In 8 minutes Broxburn gave the ball away in midfield allowing Sampson a sight of goal but he wildly shot over the bar.

Orru then took up good position on the left and slung in a cross but it was too near home keeper Welna who gathered the ball confidently.

Blackburn looked dangerous once again in 10 minutes Heath sending Sampson away down the right, he got to the bye line and fired over a great ball but there were no takers in black jerseys to apply a finish.

Broxburn’s first good move came in 14 minutes Orru slipping the ball inside to McConnell whose shot was just too high.

From a ball played in from the right the ball sat up nicely for MCCONNELL and he smashed a volley into the net off the underside of the bar.

The visitors had their tails up now G.Donaldson played the ball inside to Brass but his shot was well off target and over the bar.

Moments later and it was Henderson trying his luck from 25 yards but he hit his shot with his left foot which dragged wide right of target.

A mistake from Wright in 23 minutes gave the ball to Hutton but he overhit his pass to Sampson, the ball going out of play.

In 27 minutes Howe passed to Sampson whose cross was blocked by Wright for a corner. Another corner was then conceded with Otonti took the kick to the back post where Forrest shot over the bar.

In a break forward in 29 minutes Sampson was denied by Blair who dived at his feet with the ball being scrambled clear.

Two minutes later and from an Orru misplaced pass Otonti collected with the shot which was blocked collected by Blair.

In Broxburn’s next attack Orru played in a great ball which found the arriving Gillen but he bundled his shot past the right post.

In 35 minutes the visitors took the lead Douglas was fouled 35 yards from goal on the right, Greenhill took the free kick to the back post where WRIGHT rose majestically to head back across the goal and into the net.

Another nice move from Broxburn down the right saw the ball played into Brass whose shot deflected wide for a corner. From another excellent Greenhill corner this time Wright headed over the bar.

In 39 minutes Blackburn were awarded a free kick 35 yards out on the right, Heath took the kick with Wright heading clear the ball falling to Hutton whose shot was high and wide.

The hosts continued to look dangerous Howe doing great work on the left touchline and firing a cross hard and low into the 6 yard box where G.Donaldson did brilliantly to defend and clear.

Right on half time B.Donaldson played a great ball to Orru who chipped forward for Brass but keeper Welna was alert to the danger and collected the ball before the striker could get the ball under control.

HALF TIME: Blackburn United 1 v 2 Broxburn Athletic

Devine replaced Sampson at the break.

In 46 minutes from a Blackburn free kick Miller won the header at the back post but his effort was comfortably collected by Blair.

Blackburn had come out in the 2nd half fired up, from a mistake by Gillen, Otonti took advantage but his shot was saved by Blair. Moments later Howe got in on the right and he forced Blair into another save.

In 49 minutes Wilson was booked.

Forrest followed him into the referee’s notebook for a foul on Orru.

Greenhill took the free kick with McConnell’s head flick just going wide of the right post.

In 53 minutes Hutton did well on the right and played in a great cross which was well defended by B.Donaldson at the concession of a corner. The pressure remained on the visitors with another cross into the box from the left Wright won the header but it fell to HEATH who neatly shot the ball into the right corner of the net. Time 55 minutes.

Broxburn responded a minute later and from a Greenhill corner G.Donaldson controlled and sent the ball into the 6 yard box where there was an incredible scramble with at least 2 Brox players having their efforts blocked near the line.

In 61 minutes Howe went on a great run without being challenged with his shot going wide left from 22 yards.

In 63 minutes Downie replaced Douglas.

Wright was then booked for a foul on Devine two minutes later. Heath took the free kick but it was well over the bar.

In 66 minutes Wright unfortuanately slipped on the bye line the ball being played to Howe whose shot was brilliantly tipped on to the bar by Blair.

HUTTON was then allowed to run in from the left unchallenged and allowed to get in a shot which beat Blair to put the hosts back in front. Time 67 minutes.

Kane replaced Wilson in 69 minutes.

A big left off for Broxburn in 72 minutes from a Hutton corner no one in red reacted allowing Miller a free header which he headed wide.

Clark then replaced Orru.

G.Donaldson was booked in 74 minutes.

Gillen and Brass played a neat 1-2 down the right with Gillen getting in a cross which was blocked for a corner. Greenhill took the kick which forced Welna to punch clear.

In 81 minutes Liam Gray replaced McConnell. Hutton was then replaced by Richards.

In 86 minutes Otonti was replaced by Nicolson.

Henderson slipped the ball to Gray but the substitute didn’t catch his shot right and it went easily through to Welna.

Howe was booked in injury time.

For the final league game of 2022 Broxburn welcomed their table topping neighbours Linlithgow Rose to Albyn Park.

Broxburn made 5 changes from their last league game on 3 December against Tynecastle B.Donaldson, Douglas, Jeffries, Sayers and Brass for Harrison, Binnie, Gray, Newall and Clark.

Linlithgow made changes from their last league game at Lothian Thistle on 3 December, Webb, Heaver and Stowe replacing Allison, McPherson and Cunningham.

With four minutes on the clock Mark Stowe made a run down the right before crossing into the box where Jack Sayers cleared the danger .A couple of minutes later the same player made another run getting to the bye line before the home defence grouped to block the cross for a corner. The corner went to the back post where Jordan Wright cleared for another corner which came to nothing after being over hit .

The hosts had a chance on 11 minutes when a corner in from the left found Wright at the back post but he went narrowly past the upright hitting the side stauntion with a header .

At the other end Stowe gathered the ball on edge of the box but his shot was saved comfortably by Josh Blair in the home goal .

In 18 minutes after good work down the left by Webb the ball was crossed to the penalty spot where STOWE was unmarked and he cracked the ball into the top left corner of the Broxburn net.

Broxburn responded positively 5 minutes later Sayers made ground down the right sending over an inch perfect cross for DOUGLAS to connect with a diving header which beat Binnie in the visitors goal.

In 28 minutes Heaver got to the bye line and fired over a cross which Blair fumbled, Wright was on hand to help his keeper scrambling out for a corner. The Brox cleared their lines from the corner.

On the half hour Heaver scuffed a shot which hit a defender and broke to Sneddon who shot past the post.

In the following minute a real let off for Broxburn Bremner sent Stowe in the clear who lobbed the ball over the advancing Blair only to see his effort bounce off the bar and fall to safety.

In 33 minutes Brass sent Gillen away down the right his cross was blocked off with Douglas waiting to pounce.

Gillen passed the ball to Brass 30 yards out the striker lined up a shot which he didn’t catch right and he dragged his effort wide left.

In 39 minutes from a long Sayers throw Brass won the header which went wide right.

Linlithgow began to assert with half time looming the ball being played to Sneddon 25 yards out with his well struck shot well held by Blair.

The visitors did even better with the last kick of the first half BREMNER cutting inside from the right and curled a great shot into the top left hand corner of the Broxburn net.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 2 Linlithgow Rose

Things got worse for the home side early in the 2nd half in 49 minutes McMullan beating B Donaldson  and crossed inside the 6 yard box with HEAVER all alone to tap the ball into the net from a couple of yards.

In 57 minutes Henderson replaced Downie.

A minute later Wright was booked for a foul on McMullan.

From the free kick Stowe took the kick from 25 yards out which rattled the Broxburn bar.

In 62 minutes Heaver was replaced by Docherty.

A minute later and the visitors fashioned another goal DAVIDSON picking up a loose ball and hitting a shot from 22 yards into the net just out of reach of the despairing Blair.

In 67 minutes another slick visitors move down the right saw Sneddon feed Stowe whose effort was brilliantly blocked by B.Donaldson for a corner.

In 69 minutes McConnell replaced Jeffries. For Linlithgow Allan and Cunningham came on for McMullan and Sneddon.

A minute later Webb was booked for a foul on Henderson.

In 75 minutes in a rare Broxburn attack Gillen got in the clear but he couldn’t get enough on his effort to beat Binnie.

Brass was then booked for a foul on Webb.

In 84 minutes later Orru was fouled by Davidson 25 yards out left of centre, Henderson took the free kick but his effort was well overhit.

Docherty beat Sayers on the left and sent over a great cross which Cunningham through himself at but just couldn’t connect with.

McConnell was booked for a foul on Cunningham. From the free kick Stowe hit the defensive wall.

In 89 minutes from a Stowe corner CUNNINGHAM bulleted a header into the Broxburn net to complete a miserable afternoon.

There was still time for another Linlithgow chance Cunningham finding Docherty who cracked a great shot against the home bar, the third time the visitors had hit the woodwork.
