Pre – Season Friendly: Broxburn Athletic v Gartcairn 15 July 2023

Broxburn welcomed West Premier League newcomers Gartcairn to the Albyn for the fourth pre-season friendly, on another warm sunny day. Broxburn made 7 changes from the starting line up used in Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Gala Fairydean Rovers. Watt replaced Donoghue in goal, Page, D.Nimmo, Douglas, Brass, Trialist No. 7 and Locke replaced Campbell, Downie, Heath, Gillen, Trialist 21 and Turner.

Gartcairn had a great 2022/23 season being promoted into the West Premier league as champions. They kicked off their pre-season friendlies last weekend beating Thornton Hibs 6-0.

The visitors almost got off to the perfect start in the 2nd minute Aitken sliding a great ball through to Burns who lobbed Watt but his effort cleared the bar. Although the referee’s assistant did flag the centre forward offside.

Broxburn went straight down the other end with Locke playing the ball into the penalty box to try and find Brass but Dunlop anticipated well and cleared.

In 8 minutes Locke played a brilliant pass inside Boyle for Munro to run on to and he drilled in a cross which McGlauchlan defended well at the near post.

A minute later and a mis-placed pass from Crerand allowed Bremner to advance his pass to Brass was just overhit and the chance was gone.

Aitken slid a great ball through to Burns but Page brilliantly got to the ball ahead of the striker and guided the ball back to Watt.

The same combination for Gartcairn did well again Burns thwarted by an ever alert Watt in the home goal who got to the ball first at the edge of the penalty area.

In 17 minutes Douglas sent Munro off on a run down the right, his cross being blocked by Boyle at the expense of a corner. Davidson took the corner D.Nimmo got his his head to it but couldn’t direct on target being pressured well by McGlauchlan.

Gartcairn then had a real let off goalkeeper Pirie dwelt on the ball and was caught by Brass who tried to shoot but the keeper did well to recover and save.

Another good home move saw Brass head flicking the ball on to Douglas who got into the box and hit a shot with his left foot which just cleared the bar.

In the 24th minute Boyle’s cross from the left found Bain who controlled well but his shot was blocked almost breaking for Burns but Watt claimed the ball before the striker.

Two minutes later Bremner threaded a pass out to Douglas on the right he got to the bye line cutting back for Brass who held the ball up and fed Munro who cracked a shot for goal which was blocked for a corner.

Davidson took the kick which found the head of DOUGLAS who powerfully headed the ball into the net. Time 27 minutes.

Gartcairn had another let off in 29 minutes from a long ball forward Pirie and Boyle seemed to leave to each other to deal with Brass got inbetween them and got a foot to the ball but his effort went over the bar.

MUNRO then showed great awareness dispossessing Mitchell in midfield and taking a few strides forward before drilling the ball low which Pirie got a hand to but couldn’t prevent the ball going into the bottom right corner of the net to put the Brox 2 up. Time 32 minutes.

Things got even better when Bremner once again fed the ever willing Munro on the right his cross blocked for a corner by McGlauchlan. Davidson took the kick again from the right Mitchell cleared to the edge of the area, D.Nimmo chipped the ball back into the penalty area finding BRASS where he steadied himself before firing the ball into the right hand corner of the net. Time 34 minutes.

In a free flowing Broxburn passing move Munro hit a tremendous cross deep to the back post which found Millar arriving at full tilt his fierce header brilliantly saved by Pirie and scrambled clear.

In 43 minutes a clear opportunity for Gartcairn to pull a goal back Boyle’s cross saw Page slip leaving Burns with a free header but he could only direct his effort straight at Watt.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 3 – 0 Gartcairn
Changes at half time for Broxburn were T15 for Munro and Campbell for Millar. Gartcairn replaced Bain with Stevenson.
In 50 minutes Campbell made good ground down the left his cross well defended by Stevenson.
A long ball forward by Crerand trying to seek out Burns but Watt was aware of the possible danger and got to the ball first at the edge of his penalty area.
In 56 minutes from a short taken free kick Davidson played to T7 on the left whose cross was blocked for a corner. Davidson’s delivery was pinpoint once again with D.Nimmo chesting the ball goalwards which McGlauchlan did well to clear off the line.
Bremner took a free kick 3 minutes later which curled round the wall but was collected by keeper Pirie.
Campbell was penalised for a foul on the hour which Aitken took, Stevenson got his head to the ball but couldn’t direct on target.
More Broxburn changes followed Brass, Locke and Trialist No.7 were replaced by Downie, Heath and Gray.
Downie spurned a great chance set up by Douglas, with his first touch having a clear sight of goal he shot wide left from 12 yards.
In 65 minutes Crerand went off for Gartcairn Lermouth coming on as replacement.
Another great Broxburn passing move saw Campbell get in a cross which McGlauchlan did well to get to and prevent Douglas from adding another goal.
Gray was fouled by Mitchell in 68 minutes 22 yards out in a central position. He took the kick himself which deflected off the wall and through to Pirie.
In 75 minutes the Brox unlocked the Gartcairn defence again Campbell’s cross was met by McGlauchlan whose clearance went up in the air, Pirie came out to try and claim but only succeeded in knocking the ball to BREMNER who volleyed the ball into the net from close range.
Gartcairn responded Burns cracking a great shot from 30 yards just over the bar.
From a Heath error in 81 minutes Burns tried his luck again but his effort was straight at Watt.
In 89 minutes Burns went on a run down the left beating D.Nimmo but his effort was blocked by Trialist No. 15 for a corner. Aitken took the kick but Downie cleared.

BROXBURN ATHLETIC V GALA FAIRYDEAN

Pre – Season Friendly: Broxburn Athletic v Gala Fairydean Rovers 11 July 2023 

Broxburn’s third pre-season friendly saw Lowland League Gala Fairydean Rovers make a trip to the Albyn. Broxburn made 5 changes to the starting side from Saturday’s 2-1 win v Dundee North End, Donoghue, Downie, Heath, Gillen and a trialist replaced Watt, Page, Douglas, Brass and Gray.

Gala Fairydean got their pre-season friendlies started last Saturday drawing 1-1 at home with Kilsyth Rangers.

Broxburn took the lead on 10 minutes when a lobbed pass back to the keeper saw him with a heavey touch that broke to HEATH who kept his composure to round the keeper and slot the ball home .

Gala tried to respond to going a goal down in 16 minutes Drammeh went on a good run down the right which was stopped illegally by Millar just outside the box on the right. Reid took the kick but his effort hit the Brox wall.

Two minutes later Heath fashioned a chance for himself on 18 minutes hitting a shot which crashed off the corner of bar and post and scrambled away, the danger wasn’t over with Downie getting on the end of a cross which Dick was fortunate to save with his feet when knowing little about it.

In 23 minutes a long ball forward from keeper Dick caught out Millar, Drammeh was quick to capitalise advancing into the Brox box but Millar recovered well to win a goal kick off the forward.

Gala were having a decent spell Boyle advancing down the right and sending over a dangerous cross which Munro did brilliantly to head flick away from trouble.

In 26 minutes Watt threaded a ball through to Drammeh but Donoghue made a fantastic save at the Gala players feet to thwart the danger.

The Brox forced 3 corners in quick succession Campbell almost squeezing in a header at the back post but Dick tipped over. Davidson hit a shot from the edge of the box from the second one which deflected for another corner. It was 3rd time lucky from Heath’s pin point delivery BREMNER with a glancing header, the ball flying into the left hand corner of the net. Time 32 minutes.

A great Brox passing move in 36 minutes ended with Gillen firing over a great cross which the Gala defence just prevented from going to Downie.

In the 43rd minute Semple forced his way into the box and slipped the ball to Watt whose shot was blocked for a corner. The corner was played short and a cross fired in to the box where Donoghue was adjudged to have been fouled.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 2 – 0 Gala Fairydean Rovers

In 50 minutes Watson replaced Boyle for Gala.

Drammeh was penalised for a foul on the right, Heath took the free kick but Dick claimed well.

In 55 minutes Drammeh won a corner off Campbell. Watt took the corner but Downie rose well to clear.

There was more urgency about the Gala play now and this paid off when substitute Watson got to the bye line with his cross deadly accurate for REID to head into the left side of the net.

Gillen had to leave the field with an injury and was replaced by Wilson in 59 minutes.

The right side was proving a focal point of the visitors attack Watson again crossing well to find Ostel whose shot was well blocked and cleared.

In 62 minutes Douglas and Brass replaced Downie and Heath.

Three minutes later and another home change D.Nimmo replaced Millar.

In 66 minutes Turner took a corner on the right BRASS pealed off his marker and stooped to head the ball into the left corner of the net to restore the Brox’s 2 goal lead.

A minute later and Wilson worked his way into the box on the left and curled a fine cross to the back post which just eluded Douglas.

Watson was once again a danger on the right his cross this time flicked away from danger by Page who also dealt with the cross that followed from the left clearing his lines well.

In 71 minutes Turner also left the field injured Gray replaced him.

A trialist No.7 came on for Broxburn to replace Bremner in 75 minutes.

A minute later Douglas controlled the ball well outside the box and passed to Brass who cracked his shot over the bar.

Gala worked a nice opportunity for Reid whose shot was good but Donoghue did well to save at the expense of a corner. Nothing came of the corner.

Scott was then booked for Gala for a poor challenge on Davidson who had to go off injured leaving the Brox with only 10 men.

Gray lost the ball in midfield in 84 minutes with Ostel played in and hitting a strong shot which Donoghue was the equal of as he parried and collected.

From a corner in 86 minutes Gray sent over a great ball which had the visiting defence struggling to clear which they were fortuitous to do so.

Gala forced a corner in 88 minutes which Watt took but Page rose imperiously to clear with his head.

BROXBURN ATH V DUNDEE NORTH END

Pre – Season Friendly: Broxburn Athletic v Dundee North End 8 July 2023 

Broxburn made 4 changes from Tuesday’s starting line up against Tranent, Millar for D.Nimmo, Brass for Heath, Davidson for Wilson and Bremner for the injured Sayers as they welcomed Midland League side Dundee North End to the Albyn for the second pre-season friendly.

North End had a fine season in the Midland League last season finishing 5th in the league and winning a trophy the Quest Precision Engineering Cup defeating league champions Carnoustie Panmure 4-1. They were also in action in midweek losing out narrowly by 2-1 to Highland League Brechin City.

The early exchanges were quite even with with a Brass effort being blocked the only real opening chance wise of note.

In the 23rd minute a free kick from the left was played to the back post on the right where Smith got to it but he couldn’t direct his effort on goal with the ball going out for a goal kick.

The Brox broke the deadlock Brass winning a corner kick on the right off Rice. Gray took the corner with BRASS unchallenged in the centre of the goalmouth he headed into the left hand corner of the net. Time 28 minutes.

North End responded positively winning a corner on the right Devine took the kick picking out Rice at the edge of the area who volleyed the ball which was blocked and cleared by Turner.

The visitors were passing the ball about well Bollan and Shearer combining nicely to win a corner off Page.

Devine took the kick short to Kidd whose cross was claimed confidently by Watt.

In 37 minutes Page played a long ball forward for Brass to chase but his pass was just overhit and out for a goal kick.

A minute later and Devine was fouled by Turner around 35 yards from goal , Kidd took the free kick playing an intelligent ball out to Gibb whose cross was a good one finding the head of Smith who flashed his header just wide of the right post.

In 41 minutes Bremner played a neat ball forward to Davidson who was crowded out by the North End defence and the ball cleared.

North End had another good chance in 45 minutes after some good pressure the ball broke to Montgomery who hurried his effort from the edge of the penalty box which cleared the cross bar.

Into injury time and Davidson played a nice ball down the wing to Trialist No. 2 whose cross in was right on the money Adam doing well in the visitors goal to collect.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 0 Dundee North End

Both teams made changes at half time Heath replacing Gray and Rollo coming on for Bollan.

In 51 minutes Rollo played the ball to Gibson and then onto Devine who got in a cross which Turner did well to block.

Then right of the blue the ball fell perfectly for MONTGOMERY 25 yards out who volleyed the ball into the right hand corner of the net past Watt to tie the score. Time 52 minutes.

In 54 minutes Broxburn made 4 changes D.Nimmo, Gillen, Downie and Wilson for Page, Douglas, Brass and Turner.

A fairly innocuous long ball forward was watched closely by North End keeper Adam who ended up tipping the ball over the bar for a corner. Heath took the corner but was cleared by the visitors.

In 58 minutes Davidson almost was caught out by good pressure from Montgomery but Watt was alert to the danger and collected before the North End player could create a chance.

On the hour Kidd and Shearer went off to be replaced by McLaughlin and Garden.

Devine was having a good game for North End, he cut in from the left and got off a shot which was blocked and cleared by D.Nimmo.

In the following minute Devine was sent clear but Watt again was alert to the danger and brilliantly dived at the wingers feet at concession of just a corner.

In 68 minutes a Campbell cross from the left was headed wide by Downie.

Another Brox change followed in 75 minutes Davidson went off Trialist No.12 replaced him.

In 85 minutes a nice passing move between Wilson, Campbell and Gillen lead to Campbell getting a shot off which was blocked and cleared.

Wilson and Campbell once again combined on the left with a cross only partially cleared to Gillen whose shot was well struck and saved well by Adam but he couldn’t hold on to the ball it breaking to DOWNIE who tapped the ball into the net from 3 yards out. Time 87 minutes.

Gillen got in on the right wing but his cross was too near Adam who collected the ball confidently.

Gibson then fashioned a shooting chance in injury time for himself but his effort was straight at Watt.

BROXBURN ATH V TRANENT

Pre – Season Friendly: Broxburn Athletic v Tranent Juniors 4 July 2023

Broxburn welcomed Tranent for the first of the 2023/24 pre season friendlies at the Albyn. Four of the clubs new signings made their Brox debuts from the start Bob Watt in goals, Greg Page, Kai Wilson and Lewis Turner.

Tranent had a great first season in the Lowland league and new manager Max Christie brought a strong squad with him for his sides first pre-season warm up game.

In the 2nd minute Walsh went for a run down the left matched by Sayers who conceded a corner. Home keeper Watt collected the corner kick confidently.

Tranent dominated the ball in the early stages passing it around well making it difficult for the Brox to build any possession.

Walsh was prominent again for the visitors in 10 minutes hitting a great crossfield ball which Broxburn’s trialist No. 2 cut out well and headed back to Watt.

In the 11th minute Gray tried to find Heath who took a heavy touch and lost possession. The same combination tried again a minute later but Gray’s pass was too heavy and ran through to Jack.

Broxburn lost possession 30 yards out in 13 minutes Walsh playing a neat pass to Maughan whose shot took a deflection and just went wide. Once again Watt claimed the corner kick confidently.

In 14 minutes Broxburn got a foothold in the visitors half Douglas head flicked the ball on to Heath who’s cross was cleared by Bauld for a throw. From the throw Sayers played the ball inside to GRAY whose sheer persistence paid off when he rode a couple of challenges and fired the ball past Jack into the right corner of the net to give the Brox the lead.

Walsh was fouled on the left wing with Irvine taking the resulting free kick, but Page headed the cross clear powerfully.

Irvine then did well in 22 minutes creating a shooting chance 20 yards out but his effort was straight at Watt.

The left side was where the visitors looked their most dangerous and it struck gold for them in 24 minutes WATSON beat Sayers all ends up advanced into the penalty box and curled a great shot past Watt and off the inside of the right post and into the net to tie the score.

Tranent’s passing was a joy to watch at times McIntyre and Watson combining well down the left with the former’s cross headed out for a corner by D.Nimmo.

In the 35th minute Brett’s cross from the right saw a clash between Maughan and Watt as they both went for the ball which thankfully both emerged from fit to continue.

Four minutes later Douglas sent Heath on a run down the right, his cross was a good one which Horne got to and conceded a corner. Gray took the kick, but the visitors cleared.

In 44 minutes, Walsh fed Murphy who beat 2 Broxburn players before firing just wide of the left hand post.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 1 Tranent Juniors

Tranent made changes at half time Miller, Ross and Jones replaced Maughan, Higginbottom and Walsh.

Watson was looking lively down the left and drove over a great cross in 48 minutes but none of his team mates could get within touch distance.

Gray played a great through ball to Douglas, but he was flagged offside.

The Broxburn trialist fouled Miller around 22 yards from the goal right of centre. JONES took the free kick with his left foot curling his shot over Watt and into the top left hand corner of the net. Time 51 minutes.

In the 54th minute Brett moved infield and slipped the ball to ex Brox player Ross but he sclaffed his effort and the chance was lost.

Watson and McIntyre worked a great opportunity down the left wing the former’s cross being on the money but no one in pink could take advantage.

In 56 minutes, a great home passing move saw Douglas feed Heath on right who slid a great pass back to Douglas whose shot was well smothered by Jack. The ball came back in from the right with the Brox having 3 efforts blocked one off the line by Horne with his head.

In the following minute both teams made changes. Campbell, Miller and Downie replaced Sayers, Heath and Douglas for Broxburn.

Walker and Greig replaced Brett and Irvine for Tranent.

Turner was booked for a foul on Jones in 59 minutes.

Gray was fouled around 22 yards out in a central area but his free kick was always wide right.

In 67 minutes, Watson went off Faulds coming on for the visitors.

McConnell came on for Turner in the 69th minute.

In the 72nd minute from a corner on the right Jones corner was headed in by BAULD with the Brox defence motionless.

From another corner in the 85th minute taken by Miller the ball went to the back post with Walker screwing the ball high in the air and over the bar.

In the following minute the Broxburn trialist No.2 played a great long ball forward which Downie couldn’t quite get under control to get in a shot.

The trialist did well again in 89 minutes playing in a deep cross to the back post which Campbell did well to get a touch to but couldn’t direct goal wards.

BROXBURN ATHLETIC V HADDINGTON ATHLETIC

East Of Scotland Premier League: Broxburn Athletic v Haddington Athletic 6 May 2023

 

Broxburn made 5 changes from the side which drew at Penicuik last week for the final home league game of the club’s 75th anniversary season against Haddington Athletic. Downie, Fugaccia-Hickey, Williamson, Henderson and Sayers for Gillen, Brass, Douglas, Gray and Heath.

Haddington who have had an excellent season following last season’s promotion came into the game off the back of a home loss to champions Linlithgow Rose last week by 2-1.

The visitors came out of the traps quickly Williams sending a long ball through for G.McGarry but the pass was just overhit with Blair collecting at the edge of his area.

In the 4th minute in a neat Brox passing move Bremner fed Sayers on the right but his cross into the box was just too long.

Both sides were knocking the ball about well without creating any clear chances.

G.McGarry was once again prominent in the 13th minute gathering the ball around 22 yards out and creating a shooting opportunity but his effort was well off target.

In the 15th minute Broxburn had a shout for a penalty when Fugaccia-Hickey got into the penalty box on the right side bye line appeared to be clipped by Walker but the referee waved play on. The Brox player wasn’t to be denied and got into a great position having beaten Walker but his cross was too near Cornet who claimed confidently.

Neat play down the left between Orru and McConnell saw the latter’s cross deflected just wide of the post by Aitchinson.

Haddington got the ball into the net from a corner in the 22nd minute but Blair had been clearly fouled.

In the 25th a real clear cut opportunity for the home side to take the lead, Bremner went on a strong run, fed Henderson on the left, the winger got off a shot but Cornet was the equal to it and saved.

Then disaster struck in 29 minutes Sayers passed to Nimmo who miscontrolled the ball, G.MCGARRY quickly pounced on the error advanced and slotted the ball past Blair.

The Brox tried to hit back quickly Fugaccia-Hickey again going on a run down the right beating Walker but his cross was just too high for Henderson.

Ex Brox loan player Tait then went on a run down the right cut inside and unleashed a shot which Blair saved at full length but could only palm the ball out where THOMAS was left with simplest tasks of tapping the ball into the net. Time 36 minutes.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 0 – 2 Haddington Athletic

Haddington made 2 changes at half time Szemis and Russell replacing Walker and Thomas.

The visitors started the better in the 2nd half Sayers having to look lively and provide a crucial interception to stop G.McGarry getting in a shot.

In the 51st minute Fugaccia-Hickey went down in the penalty box under challenge but once again the referee wasn’t impressed and booked the winger for simulation. Donoghue was also booked from the bench for dissent.

In 52 minutes 2 Brox changes Brass and Heath replaced Williamson and Orru.

Tait did well again down the right getting in a great cross which Nimmo had to volley out for a corner. Nothing came from the corner.

Fugaccia-Hickey brought down Tait just outside the box on the right side G.McGarry took the free kick and curled his effort off the right post, PEFFERS was first to react and fired a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Time 57 minutes.

Things got worse 8 minutes later the visitors playing the ball round nicely and Tait once again got away down the right fired over a great cross right on the money with PEFFERS on hand again at the back post to provide the finish.

The Brox got a consolation goal in 68 minutes Sayers long throw was well controlled by BRASS and he turned and smacked a low shot drilled into the bottom left corner of the net past the dive of Cornet.

In 71 minutes Gray was introduced for Fugaccia-Hickey.

A mistake from Donaldson in the 75th minute saw G. McGarry gain an opportunity, he tried to square the ball to Peffers but Sayers brilliantly intercepted to prevent the teenager getting a chance at a hat trick.

Brass got in a shot for the Brox in 81 minutes which Cornet saved easily.

In 85 minutes Haston replaced Peffers.

In 89 minutes Gray went close for Broxburn trying a speculative shot from 25 yards which just went past  the right hand post.

BROXBURN ATHLETIC V JEANFIELD SWIFTS

East Of Scotland Premier League: Broxburn Athletic v Jeanfield Swifts – 15 April 2023

Broxburn welcomed Jeanfield Swifts to the Albyn for another vital game in the clubs goal to retain their Premier League status.
The Brox made 3 changes from the side that drew at Dundonald Bluebell B.Donaldson replaced the injured Wright, Hickey-Fugaccia for Gillen and Sayers for McConnell.
Jeanfield Swifts who lost at Dundonald Bluebell in midweek by 2-1 kept an unchanged team.
In the 2nd minute a long ball forward found Douglas who flicked the ball on with his head to Brass who set Heath away but the winger hurried his shot when in good position and was well off target.
The visitors got their first sight of goal in the 5th minute Simpson playing the ball into Aloulou who steadied himself and shot just wide of the left post with the aid of a deflection. Broxburn cleared the corner to Simpson on the left but his cross was over hit and wide.
Jeanfield continued to press Simpson again prominent hitting a 25 yard volley just over the bar.
A huge blow for Broxburn in the 8th minute D.Nimmo having to go off injured. Downie replaced him with Douglas moving to centre half.
An Orru cross from the left caused issues for the visitors but they scrambled the ball past the post for a corner.
Bremner’s corner was deep to the back post and only half cleared up in the air the ball falling to Brass who volleyed wide left of the goal.
In the 17th minute the Brox squandered a golden chance Brass beating the offside trap and squared the ball to Downie in the middle of the penalty box but he hit his shot straight at keeper Mitchell.
Broxburn were in on goal again in the 20th minute Brass feeding Heath this time but his finish was poor and wide left of goal.
In the 27th minute C.Scott clipped in a ball to Fergus who fired his shot over the bar.
Hickey-Fugaccia cut in from the right and curled a left foot shot which took a deflection just wide of goal. Bremner took the corner from the left deep to the back post where B.Donaldson headed back across the 6 yard box but there were no takers in red to apply a finishing touch.
In 35 minutes a nice run from Simpson down the left hit a nice shot which was collected high by Blair.
Heath did well down the left beating 2 defenders but couldn’t fashion a shot on target his effort being wide left again.
Then the visitors had their best chances of the half, Aloulou played a great ball through to Fergus but Blair pulled off a brilliant save to deny him. The ball was played back in from the right where McLaren headed strongly for goal but Blair once again did fantastically well to deny the Swifts player.
Right on half time Hickey-Fugaccia cut in from the right and played in a cross which Bremner anticipated well but could direct his header toward goal.
HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 0 – 0 Jeanfield Swifts
Downie was booked for a poor challenge on Stewart in 48 minutes.
In 49 minutes Hickey – Fugaccia played a ball down the right which Gray did well to catch but his cross with his left foot went straight to Mitchell.
The Brox’s next attack was more fruitful Brass playing a great ball to HICKEY-FUGACCIA who hit a shot across Mitchell and into the net for a vital home lead


From a Sayers long throw in 56 minutes Brass tried an acrobatic overhead kick which was on target but straight to Mitchell.
The game was opening up a bit now C. Scott firing in a great cross but no Swifts player was able to get on the end of it.
In 59 minutes from a Gray free kick he played a ball deep to the back post where Brass won and headed across goal with Douglas connecting with his head but couldn’t direct on target.
On the hour Blair once again came up with another big save when C.Scott fired in a strong shot which the young keeper did well to parry away from goal.
In 61 minutes Wolecki replaced Aloulou.
In 70 minutes Fergus went off Logan replaced him.
Two minutes later from a corner McLaren hit a first time shot which Blair got a hand to deflecting the ball on to the post.
Another dangerous cross from the left from Jeanfield in 73 minutes from Smith got a touch from Simpson at the back post but he couldn’t direct towards goal.
In 73 minutes Henderson replaced Hickey-Fugaccia.
Stewart was booked for Jeanfield in 76 minutes.
Two minutes later a Gray free kick was won by B.Donaldson with his head but he couldn’t get enough on the header to beat Mitchell.
C.Scott went close with a shot from 25 yards but it crept wide of the post on the right.
Further Jeanfield changes followed in 80 minutes Simpson and Smith making way for Dodd and Ramsay.
In 88 minutes Logan got free but Blair did enough to put the substitute off with his effort going wide of target.
Brass was replaced by Turnbull in 90 minutes as the Brox held out for a vital win.

League Cup 2nd Round: Broxburn Athletic v Sauchie Juniors – 4 April 2023

Cup tie action at the Albyn under the lights as Broxburn welcomed high flying Sauchie Juniors in the 2nd Round of the League Cup.
Broxburn made 6 changes from the loss against Inverkeithing Hickey-Fugaccia making his debut, Brass, Gray, Henderson, Sayers and Williamson replacing B.Donaldson, Wright, Downie, Orru, Clark and Gillen.
Sauchie came into the game off the back of a 4-1 defeat at home to Drumchapel making 2 changes Hutchison and Kavanagh replaced Tully and Kelly.
The visitors were fast out of the traps Davidson getting clear on the right and playing a ball back to the edge of the penalty area where Kavanagh struck a shot which was straight to Blair in the home goal.
Broxburn responded in the 3rd minute Douglas forcing a corner off Morgan. Gray took the kick from the right Docherty conceded another corner which Gray again sent in, right on the money but Sauchie again scrambled clear for another corner. This time the ball was cleared as far as Henderson, his shot was blocked it broke to Douglas who couldn’t quite get the ball under control and the chance was lost.
Columbine was fouled by Gray in 6 minutes, the free kick was quickly taken, Smith played a great ball across goal in the 6 yard box but there were no takers in blue to apply a finish.
In the 8th minute the Brox passed up a glorious chance Gray chipping the ball over the defence for Brass who slipped before shooting with his effort going well wide.
Another neat move down the right saw Brass play the ball into Williamson who curled a great effort just over the bar.
In the 14th minute Broxburn were guilty of a glaring miss, Gray the architect again playing over the Sauchie defence setting Williamson in on goal, he slid the ball to the left with the keeper now beaten but Douglas somehow screwed his shot wide of goal.
That proved critical as Sauchie broke forward down the left, the ball played in to the box by Docherty found DAVIDSON who smacked the ball into the roof of the net. Time 15 minutes.
The visitors had their tails up Docherty again prominent with another great cross Davidson cutting the ball back to Kavanagh whose shot was deflected wide for a corner.
Sauchie were having a great spell Morgan chasing the ball down on the left and playing into Kavanagh who couldn’t get enough on his shot to beat Blair.
In 24 minutes the Brox drew level Gray once again beating the Sauchie defences high line with a chipped pass which DOUGLAS advanced on to and lobbed over the advancing Clark and into the net.
The home side almost took the lead in the following minute Brass getting in on the right he cut back to Bremner who played across to Douglas but his effort was blocked when well placed.
In the 32nd minute Kavanagh was booked for applauding the referee.
From a corner on the left in 37 minutes Henderson swung in, Clark punched clear Gray intelligently played the ball back in to Douglas whose shot was blocked and cleared.
Carroll was then booked for a bad challenge on Gray.
In 42nd minute a let off for Broxburn Docherty played in a great ball where Kavanagh with the goal at his mercy shot the ball past the post.
In first half injury time Sayers swung in a cross which Douglas won with his head but he couldn’t direct on target.
HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 1 Sauchie Juniors
Sauchie started the 2nd half brightly Morgan’s shot from the right taking a deflection for a corner. Smith curled the corner kick in but it just cleared the bar.
In 49 minutes Williamson lost the ball to Morgan from a clear shooting position to the right in the penalty box he dragged his shot wide.
Smith was next to have a shot but he pulled his shot wide of the left hand post.
In 54 minutes only the linesman’s flag prevented the Brox from taking the lead Henderson going on a great run and clipping a ball through to Williamson who slotted the ball beyond Clark.
Sauchie were pressing hard around the hour mark Balmer getting on the end of a ball crossed in from the left and his effort rattled off the left hand post.
A great Broxburn move in 69 minutes Henderson picking up the ball in his own half and running deep into Sauchie territory and playing the ball wide to Williamson whose cross was deep to Brass at the back post but his cut back just eluded Douglas.
In 71 minutes Henderson was booked.
Five minutes later and the Albyn was set alight great play between WILLIAMSON who found Bremner who picked out the youngster with a return pass and he slotted the ball past Clark for a fine first goal for the club.
In 80 minutes former Brox strikers Kelly and Anderson replaced Davidson and Williamson.
Two minutes later a great deep cross in from the left found Kavanagh but his header went narrowly past the right post.
In 82 minutes Morgan struck a strong shot from 35 yards which Blair dived to save the ball broke away from him but McConnell did well to complete the clearance.
Then another deep cross in from the left found KAVANAGH with this time the striker diverting his header over Blair and into the net.
Late heartbreak for the Brox in the last minute, a corner was taken short by Smith to an unmarked Collumbine in the box with his effort finding KAVANAGH who got to the ball first and slotted the ball into the home net.
Carroll and Morgan were also booked in the game for Sauchie.

Linlithgow were on top early doors and pressured the home defence from the kick off but they stood firm . In 2 minutes a cross ball from right to left was turned behind for a corner as Heaver shot goalward . The opening goal did come early doors on 8 minutes when another cross field ball opened up Broxburn and the ball into the box was knocked out to DALE BAXTER who fired home from 20 yards .
Mark Stowe tried his luck from 30 yards on 12 minutes but was way over the target . Linlithgow had another chance on 17 minutes when they hit the woodwork . Two minutes later on 18 minutes a long ball down the left was met by ERROL DOUGLAS who ran through and cut inside the box before firing past Binnie in the visitors goal . Calum Bremner had a golden opportunity to score against his former club when he won the ball on the edge of the box but pulled his shot wide left of the target . Just after the half hour mark a determined run down the right by Jack Sayers , he got to the bye line before sending the ball into the box and Douglas headed the ball back across the six yard box but Steve Clark couldn’t turn the ball in from four yards and inexplicably he put the ball over the bar . Mark Stowe made Shaun Donoghue make a great save on 37 minutes . With the first half coming to an end just prior to this another good left to right ball set up a cross into the box where Sean Heaver fired over the bar from 16 yards under no pressure .
The second half saw Linlithgow step up the pace and on 54 minutes Cunningham was unlucky to see his shot go over the bar as he snatched at it . Linlithgow regained the lead on 56 minutes when a ball into the box found DALE BAXTER who made no mistake to fire past Donoghue . Broxburn almost equalised a couple of minutes later when a corner in from the left found Dan Nimmo who’s header went over the bar . A minute later the visitors doubled their advantage from the spot after a foul by Nimmo just inside the box . Up stepped DALE BAXTER to smash home for his hat trick . It was almost 4 on 68 minutes when the visitors hit the post for the second time in the match . Mark Stowe was set up on 76 minutes but couldn’t find the target . Linlithgow put the tie beyond doubt with ten minutes to go when a corner to the back post was miskicked and trundled in to the net from CONOR McKenzie . Broxburn pulled one back on 86 minutes when Gary Brass went on a great run before firing home from just inside the box .
With no more scoring it was Linlithgow who go through . A better performance of late from the home side and could have been so different had chances been converted . We now move on to important league business next Saturday when as part of the groundhop weekend we kick off at Musselburgh Athletic at
7-45pm .

Broxburn made 1 change from the side which had won in the League Cup last week at Preston, Williamson replacing Wright.
Lothian Thistle had also won in the League Cup last week defeating Ormiston Primrose 3-0.
The Brox got off to the perfect start in the 2nd minute Williamson took a free kick on the left and his perfect delivery was met by the head of DOUGLAS who nodded the ball into the right corner of the net.
In the 6th minute Scott played a long ball forward to Wringe but D.Nimmo did really well to play the ball back to Donoghue to deny the striker.
From a Bremner corner in the 8th minute keeper Swan punched clear Clark played back into the box but Miller headed clear strongly.
Brass did well on the right to win a corner off Inglis. Orru took the kick swung into the near post where Scott cleared, when the ball came back into the penalty box Binnie and Douglas were challenging Swan with the referee awarding the keeper a free kick.
Signorini did well to advance down the left and into the penalty area where he clipped in a cross which was defended and cleared by Orru.
In the 12th minute Broxburn had a great chance to double the lead Williamson played in a good ball from the right to the back post where Binnie crashed his shot into the side net.
Gillen fouled J.Viola on the left, from the free kick Miller won the header which broke to Findlay whose shot flew straight to Donoghue.
In 15 minutes Bremner got into the box on the right his shot took a wicked deflection and struck the bar with Swan scrambling clear.
Orru and Brass linked up well in 20 minutes playing a 1-2 it was only a timely interception and clearance from Miller which prevented Orru being in the clear.
Muir struck a shot from 22 yards out which was blocked by D.Nimmo and broke to Penker who shot on target forcing Donoghue to dive to palm away.
Binnie and Gillen combined well on the right with the full back hitting a cross which Binnie took in his stride but couldn’t direct on target.
In the 31st minute B.Viola was replaced by Moore due to an injury.
In the following minute the visitors struck a blow B.Donaldson headed clear the ball falling to MILLER 25 yards out who smacked a great shot low into the left corner of the net.
In 37 minutes Brass and Gillen combined on the right with the wing back’s cross just out of reach of Binnie.
With the Broxburn defence backing off SIGNORINI was allowed to advance on the left and squeezed in a shot from a tight angle into the right side of the net. Time 38 minutes.
In the 42nd minute J.Viola played a long ball forward which Wringe he collected the ball and his shot had Donoghue diving to save and palm away.
Bremner fouled Signorini 22 yards out Findlay took the kick and rattled the post right oon half time.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 2 Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale
Downie replaced the injured Binnie at half time.
Signorini beat Orru on the right his cross saw Bremner get a touch which wasn’t far off going into his own net just drifting by the post.
From a long ball forward in 55 minutes Findlay put over a great ball which B.Donaldson cleared.
Orru won a corner which Bremner took Brass won at the back post but Miller was on hand to concede another corner. Orru took the kick again D.Nimmo couldn’t apply a finish at near post.
In 61 minutes Findlay was brought down by Gillen with the referee awarding a penalty. SIGNORINI sent Donoghue the wrong way from the spot.
In 67 minutes Henderson replaced Williamson.
Things went from bad to worse 5 minutes later a long ball forward was won by Findlay who played the ball back to MUIR who cracked a great shot into the bottom right hand corner from 25 yards out.
In 71 minutes Wright replaced Brass.
Douglas found Henderson with a pass with his cross cum shot just drifting wide right.
In 75 minutes Clark and Gillen were replaced by Gray and Sayers.
From a Henderson corner B.Donaldson won a header but couldn’t direct his effort on target.
In 80 minutes Findlay went off being replaced by Renton.
Henderson got in another effort at goal as the Brox tried to reduce the deficit but Swan saved comfortably.
Wright sent Orru away down the left his cross was met by Douglas but his header was over the bar.
In 87 minutes D.Nimmo made an unforced error which Wringe was onto but the defender managed to pressure the striker into hitting his shot over the bar.
Wright was booked in 88 minutes.
In the last minute to complete a bad afternoon MUIR once again cut in from the left and cracked another 25 yarder into the Brox net.
Douglas was also booked for Broxburn.

 Broxburn had their 3rd home league game in a row this time with 2nd bottom of the table Oakley United as visitors.

Broxburn showed just the 1 change from last week B.Donaldson returning from injury replacing Wright.

Oakley had been showing signs of improvement of late going down 5-3 at Sauchie in midweek.

In the 3rd minute Brass got into decent position on the left until Goodlad got in a timely interception which broke back to keeper Irvine.

Four minutes later Clark hit a long ball into the box which was back headed for a corner. Henderson took the kick Dawson headed away the ball falling to Bremner whose shot deflected for another corner. Henderson and Bremner worked the ball short Bremner again hitting a shot which this time ran wide left.

Then the visitors had a great chance Stanfield sending Yapoudjian clear but he shot straight at Donoghue who palmed out for a corner. The corner was disappointing going straight out.

The Brox responded Gillen played the ball in from the right Brass controlled well with his volleyed effort blocked for a corner. Orru took the kick from the right With Douglas winning the header which went over from close range.

In 20 minutes Brass crossed from the right Douglas won and back headed the ball to Clark who hit a shot on the turn forcing Irvine to save and concede a corner.

Henderson took the kick from the left DOUGLAS was left with the simplest of tasks to head into the net from a few yards to put the Brox ahead.

Great defending from Sayers prevented Yapoudjian getting in on goal.

Brass put in a great ball from the right with a defender getting a vital touch to deny Douglas and Binnie who were waiting to pounce.

Watson then had a shooting opportunity from 25 yards which was on target but straight at Donoghue.

In 29 minutes Clark sent Brass away down the right he hit a hard and low cross which just was out of reach of Binnie sliding in at the back post.

Three minutes later Orru was fouled 25 yards out to the left, he worked a 1-2 with Henderson which created a chance with Orru cutting the ball back from the left to Henderson who fired a shot on target which Irvine saved at the near post.

The in 34 minutes a let off for the home side Yapoudjian getting in a great cross from the right laying the ball on a plate from 6 yards for McAdam who was denied by Donoghue his save falling into save of the season category.

Orru then hit the top of the bar from a corner.

There was a sting in the tail in first half injury time Penman crossed in from the right and as a few minutes earlier MCADAM was unmarked but this time he applied the finish to draw Oakley level.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 1 Oakley United

Cowan replaced Young at halftime.

In 46 minutes from a Henderson corner the ball was bobbling dangerously in the visitors box near the goal line but they scrambled the ball to safety.

In 52 minutes Dawson brought down Douglas the referee appearing to point to the penalty spot but only a free kick just outside was awarded. Dawson was booked. Brass took the kick being tipped on to the post by Irvine and wide. Henderson took the corner but Douglas headed wide.

The Brox did have the ball in the net in 55 minutes but was chalked off for an infringement.

Gillen put over a tempting cross in which Binnie, Douglas and Brass couldn’t force past Irvine in a goalmouth scramble.

Disaster then struck as Oakley went down the field the ball falling to YAPOUDJIAN at the back post and he fired a fierce shot into the roof of the net past Donoghue at his near post.

In 66 minutes Broxburn tried to respond Orru taking a corner Brass winning at the back post but once again an Oakley defender was there to concede another corner which bore no fruit.

The Brox created another great opportunity a minute later Douglas the provider this time setting up Clark who struck his shot well but Irvine was the equal of it.

From a long ball by Donoghue Binnie did well to fashion a chance and crossed Douglas’s effort again was blocked with the ball breaking to Bremner who blazed his shot well over.

Bremner was booked in 75 minutes. Brass, Clark and Henderson were replaced by Downie, McConnell and Gray.

In 76 minutes Oakley made a change Bruce replaced by MacKinnon.

A minute later and Binnie made great ground down the left but attempted an ambitious shot which went well wide of target.

In 81 minutes Gray threaded a ball through to Binnie but Dawson denied the Brox again.

McAdam was booked for not retreating at a free kick in 83 minutes, Goodlad joined him in the book 2 minutes later.

In the 86th minute the Brox at last drew level Douglas having a shot saved by Irvine but the rebound fell to BINNIE who smashed the ball into the net.

Sayers had to look lively in 88 minutes to concede a corner with Yapoudjian nearly breaking clear. Stanfield took the kick Douglas cleared.

Binnie was booked in 89 minutes.

In 91 minutes the ball was played in from the left to Bremner who screwed his shot wide.

Gillen played in a ball from the right but it was just too high for Binnie to get to.

The chances continued to be made Bremner played the ball to McConnell but his shot from 22 yards was high over the bar.

Great work from Gray in 95 minutes as he sent Orru away down the left he picked out Bremner with his cutback but once again the midfielders shot was off target.
