Scottish Cup 2nd Preliminary Round: Broxburn Athletic v Lochee United 2 September 2023 

The Scottish Cup returned to the Albyn for the eagerly anticipated tie between two undefeated sides in the 2023/24 season. Both Broxburn and Lochee United only having dropped league points to a draw.

Broxburn made 3 changes to side that drew at Sauchie last Saturday, Moyles, R.Nimmo & Heath coming in for Miller, Downie & Davidson.

Visitors Lochee United came into the game high in confidence after a fine 5-0 victory at Tayport and in tremendous goal scoring form having notched 54 goals in their 11 league games.

The Bluebells made 1 change to last Saturday’s starting line up Cavanagh replacing Cord.

Broxburn came out of the traps well Munro feeding a ball into Bremner but the midfielder couldn’t get the ball fully under control and Lunan cleared.

The Brox created the first meaningful chance in the 15th minute Brass teeing up Turner whose shot was cleared off the line by Colquoun.

Scobie was booked for Lochee United.

Broxburn continued to create opportunities Brass finding Campbell on the left but his shot flew over the bar.

R.Nimmo then played in a ball from the right but Locke headed over the bar.

In 31 minutes Linn played a ball to Blair down the right wing, the full back cut the ball back but there were no blue shirts on hand to provide a finish.

Broxburn responded Locke finding Heath on the left who advanced and struck a shot which just cleared the bar.

In 36 minutes Colquoun was booked for deliberate hand ball.

From the free kick Heath took the free kick which was played deep to the back post, Page headed back to Brass who cracked a volley from the edge of the box off the crossbar.

Page fouled Scobie 35 yards out, Linn took the free kick but the Brox defence cleared the danger.

In 41 minutes Hay and Johnson combined for Lochee Johnson getting to the byeline but again the Brox defence cleared.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 0 – 0 Lochee United

Broxburn made a whirlwind start to the 2nd half Brass played the ball wide right to Munro who fed the ball down the wing to R.Nimmo whose cross into the box found LOCKE whose first shot was blocked but he made no mistake with the rebound slotting the ball beyond keeper Easton. Time 47 minutes.

The Brox doubled their advantage 2 minutes later Munro the provider his pinpoint cross met by the head of TURNER whose header beat Easton.

In 51 minutes Heath did well to disposess Blair he cut the ball back to Brass whose shot was blocked the ball broke to R.Nimmo who suffered the same fate.

In 53 minutes Ferguson replaced Cavanagh.

Lochee tried to get going with Scobie who played a ball through to Hay but the breeze behind took the ball through to Watt.

Scobie again was prominent on the hour for the visitors beating 2 Brox defenders with his pass finding Hay on the left but the striker had strayed offside.

Then a moment of controversy Linn cut in from the left wing getting himself into the penalty area where he went down. There were loud claims for a penalty which the referee did not grant.

Broxburn broke straight down the other end R.Nimmo played in a ball from the right wing which LOCKE touched first time, his shot going into the net. Time 63 minutes.

Hay was booked for dissent for Lochee.

In 70 minutes Hay went off replaced by McConville.

Broxburn then made changes 2 minutes later the goal scorers, Locke and Turner went off to be replaced by Davidson and Thomson.

In 76 minutes Bremner was booked for a foul on Scobie. Wilson replaced R.Nimmo.

The Brox cut through the Lochee defence again Munro passed to Heath who played inside to Thomson who found Bremner who smacked a great shot which cracked off the underside of the bar and out. The ball rebounded back to Bremner who saw his shot brilliantly tipped over the bar by Easton.

The hard working Brass was replaced by Downie in 79 minutes.

Downie was quickly into action his cut back finding Bremner at the edge of the box but the midfielders shot was well defended and blocked by Lunan.

In 82 minutes Cord and Crichton came on for Blair and Gallagher.

Lochee registered a shot on target Tront finding Linn whose shot was gathered by Watt.

To sum up Lochee’s day substitute Cord picked up a wrist injury and had to go off 3 minutes after coming on.

In 87 minutes Thomson and Wilson set up Bremner whose shot went just wide left.

In injury time Bremner cut the ball back for Wilson who didn’t catch his shot quite right with Easton saving at his near post.

BROXBURN ATHLETIC V PENICUIK ATHLETIC

East Of Scotland Premier League: Broxburn Athletic v Penicuik Athletic 22 August 2023 

Broxburn returned to league action to face what has historically been their bogey team Penicuik Athletic. Having maintained their 100% start to the season by beating Peebles Rovers in the cup last Saturday the Brox made only 1 change to Saturdays line up Turner replaced Campbell. Penicuik have had a strange start to the season with 2 poor results losing 6-0 at promoted Glenrothes and 9-0 at Tynecastle. Things got back on track last Saturday edging out Luncarty by 3-2. The Cuikie also made 1 change to their starting line up Melvin replaced Baptie.

In the 3rd minute Penicuik made an opportunity for themselves McManus playing in a ball to Dawson with his back to goal but he couldn’t play on to a team mate to get a shot off.

The same combination were at it again in the 8th minute as the visitors positive start continued Dawson’s strike for goal was was straight to Watt who collected well.

In the 10th minute Broxburn were seen for the first time in an offensive situation when Davidson was fouled by Furness, the ball was played to the left to Turner who swung in a deep cross to the back post where D.Nimmo put in a strong challenge but was adjudged to have fouled Leiper in the Cuikie goal.

Broxburn were starting to hit their stride now Locke played a great defence splitting pass down the right wing to Munro who swung over a pinpoint cross where Leiper did superbly well to get a hand on it with Downie on hand to finish if the keeper had made an error.

In a similar incident at the other end McManus played in a cross which Dawson battled strongly for with Watt with the keeper doing well to punch clear.

Against the run of play to that point the Brox took the lead Brass controlled the ball in midfield moved forward and slid the ball to DOWNIE who controlled the ball and fired the ball into the bottom left corner of the net past Leiper. Time 16 minutes.

Turner was fouled by Taylor-McKenzie, took the free kick himself which was well met by Leiper who punched clear.

Great play from Locke in 25 minutes, he turned his man brilliantly and played in a cross which was well defended by Young with plenty red shirts on hand to pick up on any error.

Broxburn were nearly 2 to the good a minute later Munro again providing a fine cross which Downie won at the back post but his header went just wide.

A mistake by Millar on halfway allowed Penicuik a 2 on 2 situation but the visitors didn’t get it right Watt doing a great job to usher Dawson wide with his cross then unable to find Wardlaw. Time 36 minutes.

A nice free flowing Brox move was ended by captain Locke blazing high over the bar.

In 39 minutes Munro fouled Wardlaw about 20 yards out slightly left of centre. Taylor-McKenzie took the free kick which he struck well curling from left to right and just clearing the cross bar.

Penicuik went even closer to an equaliser in 43 minutes McManus forcing a corner off Millar. Young won the header from the corner which Watt did well to parry Dawson got to the rebound but his header looped over the bar.

Penicuik made a bright start to the 2nd half Melvin’s long throw was well won by Page over Dawson, Brass was then fouled with Watt completing the clearance.

In 52 minutes the Cuikie continued to press Taylor-Mackenzie cutting in from the left and unleashing a great shot which Watt did brilliantly to save at full stretch.

Broxburn forced an error in the Penicuik defence with Turner playing a ball into the penalty area but Thomson came away with the ball, Downie retrieved for Broxburn got to the bye line but he couldn’t pick out a red shirt.

In 55 minutes a long ball was played forward which Locke chased and challenged keeper Leiper who had come off his line but Locke caught the ball with his hand when trying to knock the ball past the keeper and was promptly booked by the referee.

Then a touch of class by the Brox skipper Brass’s persistence down the right saw him cross for LOCKE who audaciously back heeled the ball into the left corner of the net.

The Brox had their tails up and from a Turner corner Brass won the header which went just over the bar.

Penicuik made a change in 66 minutes Buckle went off to be replaced by Roue.

Two minutes later Locke played in a ball from the right Young conceding a corner. Turner took the kick the ball was part cleared but fell to Page whose header was cleared from inside the 6 yard box.

Locke went off for Broxburn to be replaced by Thomson.

In 77 minutes the visitors squandered a chance on the break Wardlaw laid the ball off to Dawson but his shot was high and right.

A minute later Downie came off for Wilson.

Taylor-Mackenzie was booked for a foul on Bremner. Time 81 minutes.

Two minutes later the pacy Wardlaw fashioned a shooting chance on the left which he fired wide.

In 84 minutes Taylor-Mackenzie and Dawson were substituted for Fraser and Philp.

Davidson came very close to his first Broxburn goal cutting inside on the left and curling a shot which hit the cross bar, the fall up falling to Brass who was also out of luck.

A chance fell to Wilson in 89 minutes but he shot well over.

In a high energy finish to the game a misunderstanding between D.Nimmo and Page allowed Wardlaw clean in but he shot straight at Watt who did real well to save.

Wilson and Bremner were booked in injury time for the Brox.

BROXBURN ATH V PEEBLES ROVERS

East Of Scotland Qualifying Cup 2nd Round: Broxburn Athletic v Peebles Rovers 19 August 2023

In a change of venue Broxburn found themselves at home for their first cup tie of the season welcoming 2nd Division Peebles Rovers to the Albyn on the towns Gala Day.

Broxburn made 2 changes from last Saturdays league win against Dundonald Bluebell D.Nimmo and Downie replaced Turner and Douglas.

Peebles had a great win last Saturday at Inverkeithing in the Alex Jack Cup by 3-2 signalling that they would be out to pick up a second premier league team scalp.

With a strong cross wind blowing down the ground Peebles kicked off against the elements.

In the 6th minute the visitors were first to get in a shot at goal from a corner the ball being cleared to G. Lamb whose effort was high and wide.

Two minutes later and Renwick played the ball inside on the left to R.Lamb whose cross was well collected by Watt.

Broxburn went straight down the other end Munro swung over a cross which just eluded Downie at the back post.

Munro once again was provider in 11 minutes playing in a great cross from the right Brown partially cleared but only as far as Locke who hit a shot down into the ground taking a deflection off G.LAMB and high into the net to put Broxburn ahead.

In 17 minutes Mackenzie clipped Campbell’s heals around 45 yards from goal on the right, the free quick was quickly taken by Davidson to Munro who whipped in another cross which Downie couldn’t quite reach with his head.

R.Lamb played a great ball wide to the right for MacLean but the striker was crowded out with little support.

Locke went on a great run down the left in 23 minutes leaving defenders in his wake with his run being stopped by Mackay in the penalty box, there were home shouts for a penalty but the referee saw nothing amiss.

A couple of minutes later and Bremner made good ground down the right and firing over a cross which was well defended by Mackenzie at the expense of a corner. Campbell took the kick from the right but the Peebles defence stood strong and cleared.

Bremner played a neat ball wide to Locke who crossed the ball into the box but his effort was too near Coates in the Peebles goal.

On the half hour D.Nimmo played a cross field pass to Campbell on the left who made good ground but his cut back was poor with no red shirts in the vicinity of his pass.

Peebles had a shout for a penalty when Page challenged Kivlichan but the referee waved away the visitors claims.

In 38 minutes Campbell was brought down by Brown 25 yards from goal in a central position . Locke took the kick but his shot hit the Peebles wall.

Peebles then had a good spell in the Broxburn half gaining a corner off an overhit pass back. Lamb took the kick D.Nimmo headed clear, the ball was played back in which Page dealt with. Renwick picked the ball up on the left and cut inside and hit a shot which Watt had to watch carefully to save.

Campbell was prominent in attacking positions for Broxburn his cross in 43 minutes being cleared. On his next run on the left he cut the ball back across the 18 yard line to the right hand side where BREMNER was arriving and he smashed the ball high into the net. Time 44 minutes.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 2 – 0 Peebles Rovers
McGill and Latto were substituted on for Kivlichan and Stewart.
In a bizarre start to the 2nd half in 47 minutes Locke crossed from the right Mackenzie did well to initially clear before the ball was played back in where a Peebles defender cracked a shot off his own post before being cleared.
In 50 minutes Campbell took up a good position centrally 22 yards out he hit a great left foot shot which Coates dived full length to tip the ball round his left hand post.
Peebles responded substitute McGill showed good pace down the left managing to outrun Page and fired in a shot which Watt took cleanly.
Campbell and Millar combined well down the left, Campbell crossed with Bardhi doing well to clear. In 61 minutes Davidson was booked.
In 63 minutes from a flowing Brox move Millar put over a deep cross which Munro was on to and he cracked a great shot which hit the bar.
Locke played a lovely ball down the left for the ever eager Campbell his cross was on the money with Bardhi doing brilliantly to prevent the ball getting to a Brox forward.
Peebles were still showing up well on quick breaks McGill doing well again on the left cracking in a shot high into the side netting.
In 69 minutes Downie, Locke and Millar went off to be replaced by Wilson, Heath and R.Nimmo.
In 74 minutes Peebles switched Robertson on to replace the injured R.Lamb.
Broxburn made a further change in 76 minutes Davidson was replaced by Thomson.
In the following minute Broxburn got a decisive 3rd goal Campbell once again at the heart of the move playing in a cross which BRASS controlled and tapped into the net at the near post.
Mackay and MacLean went off for Peebles being replaced by McDonald and Joyce. Time 77 minutes.
In 82 minutes R.Nimmo crossed from the right BREMNER was allowed 2 goes and got enough of a touch to send the ball in off the right hand post.
In 84 minutes Wilson was booked.
In the following minute the visitors were rewarded for their efforts Bardhi played in a ball from the right Page won in the air but at concession of a corner. Latto took the corner won by JOYCE with his head which was blocked the ball breaking back to him and he fired the ball into the net for a consolation goal.

BROXBURN ATHLETIC V DUNDONALD BLUEBELL

East Of Scotland Premier League: Broxburn Athletic v Dundonald Bluebell 12 August 2023 

Broxburn returned to the Albyn after 2 excellent away wins at Musselburgh and Luncarty to face Dundonald Bluebell. Last season’s game between the two had produced a 10 goal thriller in a 5-5 draw.

Dundonald had made a decent start to their season winning 3-1 last Saturday against Hutchison Vale and seeing off Edinburgh United 3-0 in the East Of Scotland Qualifying Cup.

Dundonald kicked off playing into the wind blowing down the ground. In the 1st minute from a clearance by the visiting defence Brown was struck in the head by the ball and required lengthy treatment and was unable to continue. In 5 minutes Rogerson came on to replace him.

Locke got in the first shot of the game in 7 minutes from the right side of the penalty box he hit the ball well but into the side netting.

However the opening goal was to come at the other end Bremner gave the ball away in midfield to Hall who slid a neat ball through to HEALY who was in on goal who steadied himself and slotted the ball past Watt.

Broxburn responded well to the setback Locke playing the ball to Davidson who in turn fed the ball into the box to Douglas who held the ball turned and slid the ball just wide of the left hand post.

In the 11 minute Douglas was fouled by MacKenzie. Turner took the free kick on the right about 22 yards from goal. Lennox in the visitors goal did well to palm the ball out for a corner. Turner took the corner low which was easily dealt with and cleared.

A real lung busting run from Campbell in 15 minutes on the left from the halfway line saw him leave defenders in his wake and delivering a cross from the bye line which Douglas couldn’t get enough on with his flick going past the left post.

A minute later and ex Brox full back Orru was fouled by Bremner 25 yards from goal on the left. Lumsden took the free kick Brass heading clear, Rogerson played back in but Watt claimed comfortably.

The Brox had a real let off in 18 minutes when the defence were split open again Hall having a clear sight of goal but he screwed his volley wide of the right hand post.

From a Turner corner in 22 minutes Page won the ball in the air his header found Douglas whose shot deflected for a corner. Turner took the kick once again creating a shooting opportunity for Bremner but he dragged his effort wide left of goal.

Broxburn allowed the visitors another chance this time LUMSDEN cooly knocked the ball past Watt and into the net to make it 0-2. Time 28 minutes.

Broxburn threw themselves a lifeline 3 minutes later Turner won the ball in midfield and fed the ball out to Munro on the right wing who sent over a fantastic cross which beat Sibanda was controlled by DOUGLAS who turned and cracked the ball into the roof of the net. Time 31 minutes.

Five minutes later Bremner played a nice ball down the wing for Brass to chase, he got to the bye line his cross being met by Sibanda who conceded a corner. From the Brox corner Dundonald broke quickly although Hall appeared to foul Campbell which wasn’t given Healy and Hall played the ball between them with the latter tapping the ball into the net but was flagged offside.

Bremner was booked in 38 minutes.

In 45 minutes Munro put over another great ball which Sibanda clearly handled in the air, the referee awarded a penalty with the Broxburn players incensed Sibanda wasn’t sent off only seeing a yellow card. Davidson was also booked. DOUGLAS stepped up to the take the penalty where he dispatched the ball past Lennox to tie the score.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 2 – 2 Dundonald Bluebell

Dundonald almost got themselves back ahead in 48 minutes Locke did well on the right to cut out a pass at the concession of a corner. Lumsden took the kick McCulloch got his head to the ball with the Brox defence scrambling the ball clear inside the 6 yard box.

There was another scare in 51 minutes Orru played in a ball from the left Campbell totally mistimed his clearance attempt which luckily went out of the reach of Healy.

In 54 minutes Munro fed Locke on the right who played over a low cross which Sibanda didn’t deal with the ball breaking to BRASS who didn’t make the best of connections on his shot but was good enough to go into the left hand side of the net to complete a great Brox come back.

Eight minutes later and it was 4-2. A Munro cross was blocked for a corner on the right. Campbell took the kick which was excellently delivered right on the head of DOUGLAS who headed down and ball flew into the net.

Downie replaced Brass in 64 minutes.

The Brox were having an excellent spell from another flowing move Davidson played a ball down the left for Campbell to chase his cross again was a good one Sibanda doing well to defend.

In 67 minutes Drummond and Healy went off for Dundonald, Smith and Murphy coming on.

A minute Broxburn made a change Heath replaced Davidson.

Locke made a great run down the right feeding Downie whose cross picked out Heath who hit a good shot on target which Lennox saved well.

Substitute Murphy was booked in 71 minutes.

A minute later another change for the visitors Mackenzie went off Kennedy came on.

From a long wind assisted ball forward SMITH just got to the ball before Page and he expertly lobbed Watt the ball bouncing before entering the roof of the net. Time 72 minutes.

Dundonald had been lifted by the goal with Rogerson sending in a cross which Kennedy won but his header looped over the bar.

Binnie a Broxburn substitute was booked off the field.

In 77 minutes Douglas was substituted by R.Nimmo.

Munro was booked for a foul on Orru.

In 85 minutes Rogerson got off a shot which Watt did well to save at Hall’s feet but the striker had been flagged offside.

Campbell sent Heath for a run down the left wing who got in a cross which Lennox did well to cut out and save.

Downie did well in 88 minutes sliding a great ball to R.Nimmo who miscued his shot completely when in great position.

Page did brilliantly in defence to strongly challenge and retain possession and then sent a fine long ball which R.Nimmo controlled but shot with his left foot went well wide on the right side.

The visitors last chance in injury time came from an Orru long throw on the left Hall and then Lumsden had shots which were blocked with the Brox seeing the game out for their 4th league victory maintaining the 100% start to the season.

BROXBURN ATH V GLENROTHES

East Of Scotland Premier League: Broxburn Athletic v Glenrothes 29 July 2023 

The league season got underway at the Albyn with newly promoted Glenrothes being the visitors. Broxburn made 3 changes from the side who had beaten Pollok last Sunday, Douglas, Brass and Dryden replacing Trialist No.9, Heath and Millar.

Glenrothes made 2 changes from last weekends 7-0 home defeat to Cumnock, Kinnes and Leishman replacing Thompson and Lumsden.

There was a strong breeze blowing down the ground in Broxburn’s favour but it was the Premier League new boys who carved out the first chance Leishman shooting high over the bar from 25 yards.

The breeze was making it difficult for both sides to settle.

Locke was prominent for the Brox in 6 minutes striding forward and sliding a great ball through to Douglas but the striker was flagged offside when in decent position.

A long ball from Page found Brass 30 yards from goal he controlled the ball turned well and smacked a shot well over the bar.

In the 11th minute C.Schiavone was booked for a bad challenge Locke.

In the following minute a great chance for Glens, Wallace played in a free kick from the right with the Brox defence sleeping Leishman was allowed a free header which Donoghue did brilliantly to keep out at his right hand post at concession of a corner.

From the corner Broxburn seemed not to have learnt any lessons allowing Bridgeford to pick out C.Schiavone who crashed a shot against the home bar.

Broxburn responded Turner taking a corner from the left which Grierson won in the air but conceded  another corner. Turner then took the corner from the right side finding the head of Brass with his effort goalbound to the left keeper Connor pulled off an amazing save to deny the Brox striker.

In the 20th minute Brass was fouled by Grierson, from the free kick Wallace conceded a corner. Turner’s corner was met by the head of D.Nimmo whose effort went straight to keeper Connor.

The Brox were right out of luck in the 24th minute Douglas beat Grierson in a foot race he then lobbed  Connor but his effort unluckily bounced over the bar.

Broxburn were coming more into the game Munro feeding the ball into Brass in the penalty area who shielded the ball and slipped the ball to Douglas but his touch was heavy and the chance was lost.

Both sides were finding it difficult to string passing moves together.

In 38 minutes Broxburn played their way through the centre of the Glens defence Munro finding himself with a chance from 12 yards where he shot to the keepers right but once again Connor pulled off an amazing save.

From the corner taken by Turner Douglas got his head to the ball but his effort flew just over the bar.

Another defensive lapse almost caught Broxburn in 44 minutes Glenrothes playing the ball in from the right Shearer was all alone at the back post his shot brilliantly saved by Donoghue. From the corner from the left Shearer was unmarked but could only get a knee to the ball at the back post which went wide.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 0 – 0 Glenrothes

Broxburn started on the front foot after the break, Davidson doing well on the right sending in a great cross but Brass couldn’t get the ball past Connor.

Douglas was in the clear a minute later on the left got into the penalty area where he went down under challenge. The referee waved aside the home teams loud claims for a spot kick.

Brass was then next to get in an effort moments later but again the visitors defence was resolute in defence of their goal.

Turner made good ground down the right playing the ball inside to Davidson who blazed a shot high over the bar.

Then Glenrothes responded in 54 minutes Brown got a great cross into the 6 yard box but no one in white was on hand to finish.

Cargill replaced Shearer for Glenrothes in 56 minutes.

Douglas did well running down the right and putting in a great ball Brass couldn’t get a shot off the ball then played back to Turner who struck his effort goalwards but Grierson cleared off the line.

On the hour a let off again for Broxburn L.Schiavone won a corner on the left which Wallace took, the ball was cleared only as far as L.Schiavone who hit a cracking shot which cracked off the home bar.

In the 65th minute the deadlock was broken, Munro played in another fine cross to the back post where DOUGLAS was alone and finally got the ball beyond keeper Connor and into the net.

Broxburn made 3 subs in 68 minutes Brass, Davidson and Dryden going off Heath, Campbell and R.Nimmo coming on.

From a nice Brox move down the left Turner played the ball to Heath whose shot was saved by Connor at his right hand post.

Glenrothes replaced Brown with McManus in the 73rd minute.

In 77 minutes Broxburn failed to deal with a throw in from the left the ball falling to DENTON who smacked the ball into the net past Donoghue.

Two minutes later Smart replaced L.Schiavone for Glenrothes.

In 82 minutes from a Campbell cross from the left a Broxburn player went down but the referee again wasn’t interested in the home penalty claims.

The visitors were still dangerous when they did come forward from a cross from the left Campbell miscontrolled but fortunately so did McManus and the chance was gone.

In 85 minutes Heath did well getting over a great cross R.Nimmo’s first shot was blocked but his second was on target and cleared off the line by Smart.

With the pressure building the Brox broke Glens hearts with a late winner Locke touching the ball on to DOWNIE inside the penalty area and he hit a shot hard and low across the keeper it clipped the left hand post and went in. Time 89 minutes.

Locke was booked in the last minute.

75th Anniversary Tournament: Broxburn Athletic v Pollok 23 July 2023

 The 3rd / 4th place play off game between Dundee United B and Livingston B turned out to be a close affair, both teams missed a penalty before United edged ahead in 70 minutes through Stirton. The Arabs added a 2nd goal in 78 minutes with Forbes on the mark. Livi pulled a goal back on 82 minutes through Reilly but there was no further scoring giving United the win.

Broxburn showed 2 changes from yesterdays starting line up Page and Heath for Campbell and Downie. Pollok made 9 changes to their starting line up Burrows, Morgan, Rumsby, Barr, Christie, Main, Docherty, Nelson and Gallacher for Burns, Forrester, Gow, Hutton, Maley, Lindsay, Forde, McKenzie and Duff.

In the tournament final Pollok were first to threaten with a high ball in that Donoghue had to watch closely and took at the 2nd attempt.

Broxburn responded and in some style Locke played a delightful pass which sliced through the visitors defence, Munro ran on to the pass and sent over a perfect cross to the near post where HEATH controlled and turned the ball into the net past keeper Starrs.

A poor kick out from Donoghue resulted in a free kick being conceded Mullen took the kick on the left side which Millar headed strongly clear, the ball was played back in and once again Millar mopped up the danger.

In the 8th minute Munro was sent away down the right wing his cross was just behind Locke this time.

Christie played in a dangerous ball from the right D.Nimmo did well to head out for a corner. Mullen took the kick, Morgan got to it at the back post but couldn’t get a clean contact on the ball and his effort went wide.

Mullen was prominent again on the left playing a great ball to Christie who played a great ball to the back post where Docherty rose planted a firm header downwards but Donoghue pulled off a brilliant save.

In the 16th minute Munro tried to unlock the Pollok defence but his pass to Trialist No 9 was just overhit.

Two minutes later Heath took a free kick on the left 30 yards out D.Nimmo made contact with his head but couldn’t direct goal wards.

Pollok broke quickly in 20 minutes Gallacher making good ground on the left, he swung over a deep cross where Christie collected he played the ball back in Donoghue dived to save but parried to BARR who headed in the equaliser. Pollok caught the Brox defence napping for a second time this time DOCHERTY applying the finish.

Gallacher was having a good game on the left for the visitors playing a neat ball inside to Docherty who was brought down at the edge of the box. Mullen took the free kick but it went straight to Donoghue.

Pollok went close again in 32 minutes Gallacher and Mullen sending balls into the home box with Millar and D.Nimmo standing strong to clear. The third cross from Mullen found Docherty at the back post But his header just went wide of the left hand post.

Turner was booked in 37 minutes.

Christie was booked for dissent in 40 minutes.

In 44 minutes Gallacher made a great run down the left his cross dealt with by D.Nimmo who conceded a corner. Mullen took the kick which found Morgan at the back post but he touched the ball wide of the right hand post.

 HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 2 Pollok

Broxburn made 4 changes at the break, Campbell, Gray, Trialist 17 and R.Nimmo replaced Davidson, D.Nimmo, Turner and Locke.

In 55 minutes Munro was booked for a bad challenge on Gallacher.

Mullen took the resulting free kick which Donoghue collected.

In 57 minutes Campbell made good ground on the left before being fouled . The free kick was played in and broke to Gray who played into PAGE who hit a left foot shot which beat Starrs and into the bottom right hand corner of the net for his first Brox goal.

Trialist No. 9 was booked and then substituted being replaced by Downie in 59 minutes.

In 64 minutes Docherty and Nelson were replaced by Anderson and Kerr.

A Brox change followed Heath going off with Wilson coming on.

In 66 minutes R.Nimmo played a great ball in with the ball chested down to Downie who cracked a great shot which Starrs did brilliantly to save at concession of a corner. From Gray’s corner Millar won the header at the back post but his effort flew over the bar.

Pollok went down the other end Gallacher beating Munro and firing over a great cross which the Brox defence managed to scramble clear.

Nice play from Wilson who played a ball into R.Nimmo whose shot was blocked by Mullen.

In 74 minutes Pollok made 3 changes Barr, Christie and Gallacher went off to be replaced by Duff, Cassells and Forrester.

R.Nimmo was booked in the following minute.

In 80 minutes Burrows was replaced by a trialist.

Great play from Gray sets# up the winning of a corner. The corner was deep where Page retrieved on the right he swung another ball in with Starrs pulling off a brilliant save to deny Gray. From Gray’s corner DOWNIE bulleted the ball into the net to complete the Brox comeback. Time 86 minutes.

The visitors were dealt a huge blow when Main was shown a straight red card for dissent in 87 minutes.

In the 3rd minute of injury time Pollok forced the ball into the box Campbell sclaffed his clearance high into the air Kerr was first to get his head to the ball but his header drifted wide left.

That was the visitors last chance crowning Broxburn as winners of the trophy and bringing down the curtain on a cracking close season.

75th Anniversary Tournament: Broxburn Athletic v Livingston B 22 July 2023

To complete the pre-season The Brox invited West Premier League side Pollok, Livingston FC B and Dundee Utd B to the Albyn for a weekend tournament to celebrate the clubs 75th Anniversary.

In the first game of the weekend Pollok played Dundee Utd B. Pollok went ahead in 40 minutes through Evan Maley’s 1st goal for the club which was cancelled out by a 48th minute equaliser from the Taysiders. Penalties were required to separate the teams Pollok triumphing 4-3 Andy Gallacher scoring the winning penalty.

Broxburn then shaped up against Livingston B in a West Lothian derby to decide who would play Pollok in the final tomorrow. Broxburn made 6 changes from the side which started against Lowland League Hearts B in midweek. Watt, R.Nimmo, Heath, T15, T16 and T21 replaced by Donoghue, Munro, Campbell, D.Nimmo, Turner and T9.

The game got off to a fast paced start Locke chased on to a long ball and won a corner off Allan. Turner took the corner kick to the near post where there were loud shouts for handball by a Livi defender but these claims were waved away.

Livingston broke quickly Goncalves playing a great ball down the right to Featherston who got away from Campbell and was dragged back in the penalty area causing the referee to point to the penalty spot. BAHAMBOULA took the kick confidently striking the ball into the net to give the visitors an early lead. Time 2 minutes.

Both sides were finding it difficult to create chances in the wind which was prevailing.

In 10 minutes Turner sent a nice pass out to Davidson his cross being blocked for a corner. Turner took the kick but Bitsindou headed clear.

Turner was asserting himself in midfield playing another neat ball out to Munro his cross controlled by Downie who turned and got in a shot from a tight angle which he couldn’t quite direct on target.

Campbell was fouled by Goncalves on the left, Davidson took the free kick , Downie flicked on with the back of his head, D.Nimmo headed back across goal where Trialist No.9 got in a shot but it deflected wide. Turner took the corner but Livi cleared their lines.

A Turner foul on Bahamboula 25 yards from goal gave the young Lions a presentable opportunity. The same player took the free kick which was well struck with Donoghue playing safe by palming the ball over the bar.

In the 25th minute Campbell went on a terrific run down the left his cross was bang on the money forcing Howie in the Livi goal to dive full length to save.

D.Nimmo was booked for a foul on Bahamboula in the following minute.

In 28 minutes Broxburn broke quickly Trialist No. 9 playing a great ball to Locke who got beyond the Livi defence but his lob beat Howie but not the right hand post.
In the following minute Davidson tried an ambitious shot from distance which Howie parried and gathered at the 2nd attempt.

The pressure finally paid on the half hour Locke playing in a delicious ball from the right which TRIALIST No. 9 guided neatly into the net to tie the scores.

The trialist had a brilliant chance to double his tally shortly afterwards Davidson sending him clear but his effort just missed the net but hit the side netting.

In the 33rd minute the trialist was played in again on the right he tried to place his shot wide of Howie but the keeper was the equal of the effort and saved with his feet.

Munro went on a great run down the right and his cross was accurate and met by Trialist No. 9 but he saw his effort go over the bar.

Campbell fouled Stenhouse on the right in 43 minutes. Stenhouse took the kick himself and his cross found Bitsindou all alone 6 yards out but he volleyed over the bar.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 1 Livingston B
Into the 2nd half and Livi were first to create a chance Bitsindou and Bahamboula interchanging passes to allow the former a clear shot which went well wide of the right hand post.

In 54 minutes Heath replaced Trialist No9.

Munro collected the ball 40 yards from goal advanced forward and unleashed a shot which was well off target.

Campbell looked dangerous on the left beating a defender and playing in a cross to the near post which Locke got to with his shot blocked off by Allan and scrambled clear. The Brox retrieved possession settling up Munro who cracked a shot from 30 yards which just cleared the cross bar.

Turner went off injured in 63 minutes Trialist 15 replaced him.

In a nice Livingston move Stenhouse beat Campbell and his cross was begging for a touch but no young Lions were in the vicinity to do so.

In 72 minutes Featherston, McAuley and No. 19 went off to be replaced by MacFarlane-Letham, Kirk and McAfferey.
Broxburn also made changes Downie and Munro going off Gray and R.Nimmo coming on.

The Brox were getting stronger as the game went on Campbell and Heath combining well, with the former crossing in which Locke got to but once again he was thwarted this time by keeper Howie.

Heath did well in 84 minutes on the left sending over a great ball which Locke got his head to heading down but Howie managed to get enough on it to keep out of the net.

Campbell was booked in 85 minutes.
The Brox pressure finally paid off Campbell and Heath again the architects on the left , Heath hitting the bye line, his cross was pin point for R.NIMMO at the back post who applied the finish from close range to give the Brox the win and a place in tomorrow’s final against Pollok.

Pre – Season Friendly: Broxburn Athletic v Hearts B 18 July 2023

Broxburn continued their pre-season friendlies with the visit of Lowland League side Hearts B to the Albyn. Broxburn made 6 changes to the starting line up from the one who had impressively over turned Gartcairn 4-0 last weekend. R.Nimmo, Downie, Heath, Trialists 15,16 and 21 replaced Munro, Page, D.Nimmo, Douglas, Brass and Trialist No 7.

Hearts B finished in 13th position in their first season in the Lowland League in 2022/23. They had been in good form in their pre-season friendlies winning 3-0 against Preston Athletic and last Saturday 3-1 versus Dunbar United.

There were early chances in the game for both sides. In the 2nd minute McLuckie made good ground down the left and then squared to Kirk who worked keeper Watt who saved with his feet.
Bremner had a chance for the Brox but he headed the ball past the right post.
In the 11th minute Bremner was fouled around 30 yards out, Locke took the free kick but it was high and well off target.
Down the other end and McLuckie made a good run down the left and cut back to Kirk whose shot was blocked for a corner. Watt claimed the corner confidently.
In the 14th minute Heath cut in from the left and was fouled 30 yards out by Chisholm. Davidson took the kick deep to the back post but was overhit and beyond Millar.
Hearts were knocking the ball around well with Chisholm trying his luck from distance but Watt saved comfortably.

In the 20th minute Friel committed a foul on Locke on the left Davidson took the kick which was palmed in the air by keeper McFarlane which he took at the second attempt.

A decent Brox move in 26 minutes saw Davidson slide a good ball out to R.Nimmo who whipped the ball in just eluding Downie in the process.

The Brox’s best effort at goal came on the half hour Heath cutting inside and letting rip a shot from 22 yards which McFarlane did brilliantly to save and parry round the post at the expense of a corner. Davidson took the award but the keeper was fouled ending the move.

Broxburn were defending the slick Hearts passing moves well McLuckie again prominent and getting off a shot which was blocked by Trialist No 21. Another chance presented itself this time Friel who couldn’t keep his shot down.

R.Nimmo and Trialist No 15 combined well down the right wing R.Nimmo swinging in a cross which McFarlane collected well.

In 37 minutes Friel took a free kick which from 22 yards which just curled over the bar.

In the 40th minute the breakthrough came for the wee Jambo’s nice work down the right saw the ball worked inro DALL who was afforded time to turn and slot the ball low past Watt into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Ross then fired in a shot which was straight at Watt.

Davidson was replaced by Gray in the 42nd minute.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 0 – 1 Hearts B
Changes at halftime: Page for Millar, Munro for Trialist No.15 and Campbell for Bremner. Hearts B introduced a Trialist No.13 in their goals.
Hearts came out of the traps flying Stevenson firing in a strong shot which Watt saved and did brlliantly to smother at Kirk’s feet on the rebound.
In the 51st minute great play from Chisholm to find McLuckie but his curling shot went just wide of the right hand post.
Stevenson won a corner off Page on the left, McLuckie took the corner picking out Friel at the edge of the box who volleyed first time but his effort went just wide of the left post.
In 56 minutes the wee Jambo’s were awarded a penalty Trialist No.16 bringing down Kirk. KIRK took the penalty and sent Watt the wrong way his kick going left, the keeper to the right. Time 57 minutes.
In the following minute Kirk went off to be replaced by Plesiewicz.
The Brox made good ground in 59 minutes Campbell setting R.Nimmo away down the right, the wee winger’s cross was a good one which was defended for a corner. Gray took the kick high to the back post Page won but couldn’t direct onto the target.
In 63 minutes McLuckie went off Hogarth came on.
Stevenson worked his way into the penalty box but curled his effort high and over.
Trialist No.16 made a good run down the left and cut the ball back to Heath whose shot was blocked.
Ross then got a shot off from a tight angle which Watt was the equal of.
In 70 minutes R.Nimmo was replaced by D.Nimmo and for Hearts B Stevenson and Friel were substituted for Burn and Muirhead.
A further change for Hearts B in 76 minutes Crookston replaced Duncan.
In the next minute a mistake on the right by Munro the ball was played into the back post on the right where Ross got his head to the ball but Watt saved well at his right post.
Broxburn put together their best move of the 2nd half in 79 minutes Trialist No.16 played in a great ball Heath struck a shot first time which McConnell did well to save .
Another change for Hearts B followed Ross went off Anderson on then not long after Dall was replaced with Trialist No.17.
Hearts B should have added to their tally in injury time Plesiewicz flicking the ball through to Muirhead but he shot over when well placed.

Pre – Season Friendly: Broxburn Athletic v Gartcairn 15 July 2023

Broxburn welcomed West Premier League newcomers Gartcairn to the Albyn for the fourth pre-season friendly, on another warm sunny day. Broxburn made 7 changes from the starting line up used in Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Gala Fairydean Rovers. Watt replaced Donoghue in goal, Page, D.Nimmo, Douglas, Brass, Trialist No. 7 and Locke replaced Campbell, Downie, Heath, Gillen, Trialist 21 and Turner.

Gartcairn had a great 2022/23 season being promoted into the West Premier league as champions. They kicked off their pre-season friendlies last weekend beating Thornton Hibs 6-0.

The visitors almost got off to the perfect start in the 2nd minute Aitken sliding a great ball through to Burns who lobbed Watt but his effort cleared the bar. Although the referee’s assistant did flag the centre forward offside.

Broxburn went straight down the other end with Locke playing the ball into the penalty box to try and find Brass but Dunlop anticipated well and cleared.

In 8 minutes Locke played a brilliant pass inside Boyle for Munro to run on to and he drilled in a cross which McGlauchlan defended well at the near post.

A minute later and a mis-placed pass from Crerand allowed Bremner to advance his pass to Brass was just overhit and the chance was gone.

Aitken slid a great ball through to Burns but Page brilliantly got to the ball ahead of the striker and guided the ball back to Watt.

The same combination for Gartcairn did well again Burns thwarted by an ever alert Watt in the home goal who got to the ball first at the edge of the penalty area.

In 17 minutes Douglas sent Munro off on a run down the right, his cross being blocked by Boyle at the expense of a corner. Davidson took the corner D.Nimmo got his his head to it but couldn’t direct on target being pressured well by McGlauchlan.

Gartcairn then had a real let off goalkeeper Pirie dwelt on the ball and was caught by Brass who tried to shoot but the keeper did well to recover and save.

Another good home move saw Brass head flicking the ball on to Douglas who got into the box and hit a shot with his left foot which just cleared the bar.

In the 24th minute Boyle’s cross from the left found Bain who controlled well but his shot was blocked almost breaking for Burns but Watt claimed the ball before the striker.

Two minutes later Bremner threaded a pass out to Douglas on the right he got to the bye line cutting back for Brass who held the ball up and fed Munro who cracked a shot for goal which was blocked for a corner.

Davidson took the kick which found the head of DOUGLAS who powerfully headed the ball into the net. Time 27 minutes.

Gartcairn had another let off in 29 minutes from a long ball forward Pirie and Boyle seemed to leave to each other to deal with Brass got inbetween them and got a foot to the ball but his effort went over the bar.

MUNRO then showed great awareness dispossessing Mitchell in midfield and taking a few strides forward before drilling the ball low which Pirie got a hand to but couldn’t prevent the ball going into the bottom right corner of the net to put the Brox 2 up. Time 32 minutes.

Things got even better when Bremner once again fed the ever willing Munro on the right his cross blocked for a corner by McGlauchlan. Davidson took the kick again from the right Mitchell cleared to the edge of the area, D.Nimmo chipped the ball back into the penalty area finding BRASS where he steadied himself before firing the ball into the right hand corner of the net. Time 34 minutes.

In a free flowing Broxburn passing move Munro hit a tremendous cross deep to the back post which found Millar arriving at full tilt his fierce header brilliantly saved by Pirie and scrambled clear.

In 43 minutes a clear opportunity for Gartcairn to pull a goal back Boyle’s cross saw Page slip leaving Burns with a free header but he could only direct his effort straight at Watt.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 3 – 0 Gartcairn
Changes at half time for Broxburn were T15 for Munro and Campbell for Millar. Gartcairn replaced Bain with Stevenson.
In 50 minutes Campbell made good ground down the left his cross well defended by Stevenson.
A long ball forward by Crerand trying to seek out Burns but Watt was aware of the possible danger and got to the ball first at the edge of his penalty area.
In 56 minutes from a short taken free kick Davidson played to T7 on the left whose cross was blocked for a corner. Davidson’s delivery was pinpoint once again with D.Nimmo chesting the ball goalwards which McGlauchlan did well to clear off the line.
Bremner took a free kick 3 minutes later which curled round the wall but was collected by keeper Pirie.
Campbell was penalised for a foul on the hour which Aitken took, Stevenson got his head to the ball but couldn’t direct on target.
More Broxburn changes followed Brass, Locke and Trialist No.7 were replaced by Downie, Heath and Gray.
Downie spurned a great chance set up by Douglas, with his first touch having a clear sight of goal he shot wide left from 12 yards.
In 65 minutes Crerand went off for Gartcairn Lermouth coming on as replacement.
Another great Broxburn passing move saw Campbell get in a cross which McGlauchlan did well to get to and prevent Douglas from adding another goal.
Gray was fouled by Mitchell in 68 minutes 22 yards out in a central position. He took the kick himself which deflected off the wall and through to Pirie.
In 75 minutes the Brox unlocked the Gartcairn defence again Campbell’s cross was met by McGlauchlan whose clearance went up in the air, Pirie came out to try and claim but only succeeded in knocking the ball to BREMNER who volleyed the ball into the net from close range.
Gartcairn responded Burns cracking a great shot from 30 yards just over the bar.
From a Heath error in 81 minutes Burns tried his luck again but his effort was straight at Watt.
In 89 minutes Burns went on a run down the left beating D.Nimmo but his effort was blocked by Trialist No. 15 for a corner. Aitken took the kick but Downie cleared.
