Match Report

East of Scotland Premier League – Penicuik Athletic v Broxburn Athletic– 10/10/2020

Broxburn saw their first taste of league action for the 2020/21 season at Penicuik Park, never a happy hunting ground for the Brox and sadly that record was to continue.

Penicuik kicked off on a perfect afternoon for football with only the committee’s from each team in attendance.

In the opening exchanges both teams struggled to find their passing range. The home side were first to threaten Tansey getting to the bye line and getting his cross in which was well defended by Harrison.

Penicuik were first to have a shot at the goal in 7 minutes after good work from Stewart and Kateleza, Lamb’s effort cleared the cross bar.

In the 9th minute a long ball from Stevenson caught the Broxburn trying to play offside but KATELEZA timed his run perfectly to latch on to the throughball took a couple of touches before shooting the ball past Wallace to give Penicuik an early lead.

Broxburn were struggling to get a foothold in the game but after Nicol was fouled 30 yards out Greenhill sent a great free kick into the penalty box but there were no one in a black shirt could get on the end of it.

In 16 minutes Tansey put over another good ball which was collected by Stewart on the Penicuik right where he was fouled by Donaldson just outside the area which saw the visiting player yellow carded. Nothing came of the free kick.

Ross picked up Broxburn’s second booking 5 minutes later.

After good work by Nicol down the left side he was fouled with Greenhill again taking the free kick which needed home keeper Tait to punch clear but he was adjudged to have been fouled.

Tansey got clear down the left for Penicuik on 27 minutes but he elected to shoot wastefully wide.

Wallace was called into action in the Broxburn goal in 38 minutes when he dived full length to palm away a well struck Lamb shot.

Penicuik continued to look dangerous Connolly seeing his shot get an important touch from Wallace as the shot narrowly missed the left hand post.

Cowley replaced Richards just before half time for Broxburn.

Half Time Penicuik Athletic 1– 0 Broxburn Athletic

Broxburn looked much more purposeful from kick off at the start of the second half, Greenhill winning the ball well to set up Ireland who curled a shot which home keeper Tait saved easily.

Better was to come for the visitors after a fine team passing move Donaldson was brought down on the left hand side of the penalty box by Forbes. KELLY stepped up confidently to convert the spot kick.

Penicuik were stung into action just as it seemed Broxburn were starting to get the upper hand, Kateleza shooting well wide in 51 minutes which was his last action in the game being replaced by Devlin.

The home side re-established their lead in 55 minutes as CONNOLLY was given far much time to hit a cracking shot into the right hand corner of Wallace’s net.

Stewart was booked a minute later for a foul on Cowley.

After neat work from Ross, Ireland’s shot was blocked by the home defenders. Ireland was then replaced by Hopkinson.

Then in 63 minutes from a foul by Wright, Stevenson sent a free kick into the Broxburn box, with no claims from the home team, the referee awarded a penalty for what may have been an alleged push by Harrison but it was impossible to tell the exact reason. STEVENSON sent Wallace the wrong way from the spot kick to put the home side 3-1 ahead.

Kelly was booked for airing his feelings on the penalty award.

In 67 minutes Broxburn made further changes Redmond for the injured Donaldson and Turnbull for Greenhill.

Viola then replaced Tansey for Penicuik.

The substitute was to have an immdiate impact when Cowley failed to clear in 76 minutes, Viola nipped in to set up CONNOLLY who fired a low shot past Wallace into the net.

Broxburn tried to hit back when Ross was fouled 25 yards from goal he took the free kick which crashed into the home wall.

Penicuik then made further substitutions O’Donnell and Somerville replacing Baptie and Stewart.

In 79 minutes Cowley sent Redmond away with a pass down the left but when attempting to cross it was mis timed and floated harmlessly over the bar.

In the final minute after a Harrison foul on Devlin, Stevenson’s free kick drifted wide of Wallace’s left hand post.

Not the best start to the season for Broxburn but an early chance to right matters comes at home at the Albyn on Tuesday night when Camelon visit.

Craigroyston v Broxburn Athletic

A competitive workout for both teams on a fine sunny afternoon with a slight breeze at St Mark’s Park.

Craigroyston kicked off facing into the breeze. Both sides cancelled themselves out in the opening exchanges as they tried to find their passing range. Nicol was prominent for the Brox, breaking up Craigroyston forward forays and starting a few Broxburn moves.

There was a let off in 5 minutes for the home side when keeper Mack sliced a clearance fortuanately around Ireland and to safety.

In 8 minutes a great Nicol pass released Ross on the right but he was unable to take advantage and was crowded out by the home defenders.

Broxburn continued to assert and Ross having switched to the left wing got to the bye line and his cross was met by Ireland whose effort just crept by Mack’s left hand post.

Craigroyston had their first effort at goal a minute later but Smith fired over the bar.

Ross was causing the Craigroyston defence some anxious moments with his direct running and he went close to opening the scoring cutting inside beating a defender and getting a shot off which just went past the right hand post.

The visitors pressure paid off when Donaldson was brought down in the penalty area Ross despatched the resulting penalty into the keeper’s right hand corner of the net.

Craigroyston responded well and were level in 28 minutesafter a fine move down their left the cross was latched on to by Smith who flicked the ball to to the left hand corner of the net despite Donaldson’s best efforts to keep the ball out.

Broxburn were forced into making a substitution at this point when Andy Grant picked up a knock he was replaced by Luke Murray.

The Brox substitute managed to get a shot on target in 36 minutes which didn’t trouble Mack.

Broxburn should have gone back in front in 40 minutes Ross missing with a header and couldn’t connect when there was a chance of a follow up effort.

Hopkinson broke clear a minute later got round the keeper but had been forced wide his shot was blocked from a tight angle but the ball broke to Greenhill who blazed his shot over the bar.

Half Time Craigroyston 1– 1 Broxburn Athletic

Broxburn made two changes at half time Brass and Kelly for Hopkinson and Ireland. Craigroyston made a change too McFadden replacing Robertson.

Their was a lively start to the second half substitute McFadden being thwarted by Wallace who was forced to make a save. Broxburn in their next attack strung some nice passes together between Cowley, Donaldson and Ross which ended with Ross shooting just past the right hand post.

Broxburn were forced into another substitution on 49 minutes Gillen having picked up a knock replaced by Greg Redmond. Craigroyston made two changes in 54 minutes Swanson and Pettigrew for Raiker and Moore.

In 56 minutes Wallace had to look lively to come outside his box to beat McFadden as he tried to latch on to a through ball.

Scott Richards replaced Greenhill on 57 minutes for Broxburn.

Brass managed to get off a strong right foot shot which Mack did well to parry, Ross was on to the rebound and his shot just eluded the left hand post.

Kelly got his first shot of the game in 59 minutes but it was high over the bar.

Further substitutions for Broxburn followed Craig Turnbull for Cowley and Shaun Donoghue for Wallace.

Richards was next to have an attempt at the Craigroyston goal having been set up by Brass which forced a save from Mack who pushed the ball round the post for a corner.

In 67 minutes the visitors increasing pressure paid off when Kelly picked up the ball just inside the Craigroyston half on the left and advanced to the penalty area, he cut inside the home defender and shot expertly into the far left hand corner of the net.

Craigroyston tried to respond and from a free kick from Swanson, Donoghue made a comfortable save.

Murray was booked for Broxburn in 71 minutes.

Craigroyston made further changes in 73 minutes Mackintosh, McLennan and Scholtes replacing Dunlop, Smith and Horribine.

Broxburn added to their tally in 87 minutes after a great through ball from Murray beating the home sides offside trap, Brass strode forward and fired a shot into the net from the edge of the penalty box to complete the scoring.

Broxburn had the first chance with a good move on 9 minutes when Nico Gibson put the ball through to Conor Kelly and he cut it back to Scott Richards on the edge of the box but his shot went just over the bar . The opening goal came after 17 minutes when a good run by Nicholas Locke was passed out to Cameron Ross who’s shot was well saved  but as the ball broke out right CONOR KELLY picked it up and fired home from outside the box on the right hand side deceiving all to find the back of the net . A couple of minutes later a corner into the box saw Andrew Grant out jump all but his header went just over the bar . Half way through the half a free kick into the box was spilled by the keeper but his defence cleared for a corner before any Broxburn Attacker got near it . Locke saw a free kick from the left go narrowly past the right hand post a minute later .On 36 minutes Coldstream could have equalised when Matt Corfield headed wide of the right hand post . Broxburn doubled their lead on 40 minutes when GREG BINNIE received the ball 20 yards out and sent the ball past Turnbull into the back of the net . Corfield , a minute later again headed past the post with Wallace beaten . Broxburn went up the park with the bye kick and Scott Richards gathered the ball and went right before putting it on a plate for CONOR KELLY to shoot high into the net . With two minutes left Greg McCrudden  saw a shot saved by Wallace . in the last minute a free kick played into the Broxburn box was not defended and when the ball fell to KIERAN LEE he scored giving Wallace no chance and gave his side a life line back into the game .

At the start of the second half Coldstream started well and Craig Heugh saw a shot defended for a early corner . It was the visitors who added to the scoring on 49 minutes when Locke gathered the ball in the right hand side of the box and got to the bye line and fired across the six yard box where SCOTT RICHARDS was at the back post to score . Broxburn put the tie to bed on 62 minutes when Greg Binnie made a run into the box and the defender attempted to trip him but all though Binnie kept his feet the ball had run away and the referee gave the penalty and CONOR KELLY stepped up to score and complete his hat trick . Broxburn could have went further ahead on 71 minutes when Cameron Ross made a good run into the left hand side of the box but shot into the side netting with team mates free in the box maybe a better option . On 74 minutes Broxburn got their sixth when Richards sent JACK BEESLEY through and as Elliot Turnbull parried the original shot over his head Jack was first to the ball to force it into the net .With the game reaching the end Locke saw an effort go a begging . The last action of the game saw a corner into the hosts box where Andrew grant’s effort came off the bar . .

A good overall performance with the players coming in doing well . The strength of squad will be needed time and time again in the coming weeks and it was good to see them step up to the mark .

On five minutes Daryl Devlin saw an effort saved by Wallace . Locke again put a good ball in on 12 minutes from the right and the defence cleared just before Nico Gibson was about to head home . Craig Scott should have done better on 20 minutes when Locke set him up with a cut back but the midfielder’s shot was weak at the keeper . A minute later Whitehill attacked down the left and a cross into the box came of the bar before  Grant Gavin turned it behind for a corner . The corner swung in from the left into the middle of the box and GARY HAMILTON fired home from eight yards . Ross made a good run and shot on 24 minutes which was deflected for a corner . Nick Locke forced a good save in the first minute of the half . The visitors got on level terms a minute later  when NICHOLAS LOCKE went on a run down the left before shooting under the advancing keeper . Ross couldn’t capitalised on a good ball in from Locke on 55 minutes . Scott Richards put Conor Kelly through on 63 minutes but the strikers effort went over the bar . Whitehill spurned a chance on 65 minutes when Sommerville put a good ball on to the head of Scott Wright but the header went wide of the target . Greg Binnie saw a good ball in cleared from the danger area on 74 minutes with Whithill seeing a Ross Connell effort deflected for a corner at the other end two minutes later . Craig Scott saw a 30 yard free kick rocket of the post with a minute remaining .Broxburn almost shipped all three points when Grant Gavin was short with a pass back to Wallace but the big keeper managed to get there and steal the ball off Anthony Muir as he was about to strike .

A disappointing point with the chances created but could have gone the other way also so we move on .

St Mirren booked their place in the Fifth Round of the William Hill Scottish Cup with a deserved 3-0 win over Broxburn Athletic.

After a goalless first-half, Jon Obika opened the scoring in 54 minutes to finally make the breakthrough.

Two goals in the closing minutes from Danny Mullen and Obika put the seal on the win as Saints saw off the stubborn East of Scotland League side.

It took until the final few moments to wrap up the match, but it could have been a more comfortable afternoon had the Buddies opened the scoring with a chance inside the first 60 seconds. Calum Waters low ball across the box was laid on a plate for Obika who didn’t catch the shot well enough and clipped over the bar.

The Buddies asserted themselves in the opening stages and had the vast majority of possession and territory. Junior Morias curled into the arms of Broxburn goalkeeper Connor Wallace with eight minutes played, while Ilkay Durmus dragged an effort wide on 15 minutes.

Obika sent a tame effort into the arms of Wallace on 22 minutes after a neat exchange with Morias and really should have had Saints ahead three minutes later. Morias charged down the left-hand side and slide the ball across the area where both Obika and Durmus were waiting. The former got a toe onto the ball but it somehow creeped centimetres wide of the post. The English forward then headed past the same post just after the half-hour mark.

For all the dominance Saints were failing to make Broxburn goalkeeper Wallace work, but that would change after the interval with the goalkeeper making a good stop to deny captain Kyle Magennis on 50 minutes.

Durmus should have had St Mirren ahead two minutes later but somehow smashed wide from eight yards.

Thankfully, the wait for the breakthrough only lasted another two minutes with Obika opening the scoring on 54 minutes. It was a scrappy goal for Broxburn to lose with a low Waters effort coming off an unfortunate Broxburn defender and ricocheting off Obika into the net.

The Buddies fitness told after that and only heroics from Wallace kept the scoreline down. The goalkeeper made terrific saves to deny Morias twice, while he did well to push away a Mullen volley. Arguably the pick of the bunch came when he denied Jamie McGrath a debut goal on 79 minutes. The Irishman curled towards the far corner from the edge of the area with Wallace at full stretch to tip the ball round the post.

Wallace would make further saves in the final 10 minutes to stop Obika and Morias attempts, but Saints finally added a second to secure their place in tomorrow’s Fifth Round draw with Mullen curling home from 20 yards.

Mullen then turned provider a minute later when he slammed the ball across the ball to meet the chest of Obika to put the icing on the cake for the Buddies.
