South Challenge Cup 3rd Round: Coldstream v Broxburn Athletic – 19 November 2022

Broxburn were faced with a long trip to the Borders for their 3rd Round South Challenge Cup tie to Home Park, Coldstream. The visitors showed 2 changes from last Saturday’s 5-5 home league draw with Dundonald Bluebell Wright returning to full competitive action having been out for a year injured replacing B.Donaldson who was injured in the warm up. Newall replaced Harrison.
In the 2nd minute Grey passed to Briggs on the right he beat Orru but Wright was well placed to block the cross. Wright headed clear from the resultant corner.
The home side continued to press with Newall being forced to concede a corner which Grey took which Blair claimed, only to drop the ball but recovered.
In the 4th minute Jeffries took a decent free kick which Hume dealt with well heading back to McRitchie in the goal.
The Brox registered their first shot of the afternoon in the following minute Nimmo flighting in a free kick which was headed out and fell to Gillen 20 yards out with his effort just clearing the bar.
In the 6th minute Wright chose to back header but a Coldstream player was alert and gave chase which needed Sayers to cover and concede a corner.
Wright launched a long ball forward in the 8th minute finding Gillen who got to the bye line Hume blocked the cross for a corner. Gray took the corner from the right and he used the wind effectively to swirl the ball towards goal ending up only just going over the bar at the back post.
Broxburn had another attempt at goal when Nimmo hit a shot from the edge of the penalty box but the winger was off target and the ball went wide left of goal.
From a poor Blair kick out in 11 minutes Grey controlled and made ground to the edge of the penalty box on the right with Blair having to look lively to palm his shot to safety.
In 20 minutes a Nimmo free kick was defended well by Ingram who headed out to concede a corner. Gray’s kick found Clark at the near post but he couldn’t direct his header on target.
In 24 minutes Windram played a nice pass to Aitchison 22 yards out and his shot spiralled up and over the bar for a corner. Grey took the corner to the near post where GAY headed into the Brox net.
Gray played Binnie into a decent position in 27 minutes the striker connected well with his shot but it took a deflection on the way through making it easier for McRitchie to save at his near post.
Ingram was booked for a foul on Binnie. Time 28 minutes. Gillen took the free kick , Clark won the header but he ccouldn’t get enough on his header from the edge of the penalty box to trouble the keeper.
There was a let off for the home side in 32 minutes from a Nimmo corner Orru’s header was scrambled off the line.
In 38 minutes Newall went on a great run down the right he played the ball to Gray who cut inside with his shot deflected for a corner. Nimmo’s corner was right on the money and needed to be knocked away from the line by a defender to prevent a goal.
To end the first half Gray fed Binnie down the left, where the striker fashioned a shooting chance but his effort flew wide right.
HALF TIME: Coldstream 1 – 0 Broxburn Athletic
In 49 minutes Gray was once again prominent beating his man and crossing from the right but he couldn’t beat the first defender. In the following minute Freire replaced Grey.
The home side broke down the left Freire crossed which was a good one but there was no one in blue to capitalise.
In 53 minutes Windram was booked. Followed by Whitehead two minutes later.
In 57 minutes the ball was played into GRAY and he tried an audacious chip from inside the box which went over the keeper and into the net to tie the game.
Brass then replaced Gray.
On the hour Nimmo got free on the left but Gay defended well and got the ball back to his keeper who picked the ball up resulting in an indirect free kick inside the penalty box to Broxburn.
Jeffries touched the ball to Brass for the free kick whose shot was scrambled clear from the goal line but only broke to JEFFRIES who hit a nice shot low into the bottom left corner of the net. Time 61 minutes.
In 65 minutes Jeffries curled a great ball to the back post which Nimmo cut back the ball hit B.Wright who was fortunate the ball just went past the post.
To complete a great 9 minute spell for Broxburn they went further ahead in 66 minutes Nimmo playing the ball into Brass who laid the ball off to JEFFRIES who cracked a low a shot into the net.
In 68 minutes Gay was booked.
Corfield then came on to replace Whitehead.
B.Wright was booked in 70 minutes followed by Jeffries for Broxburn.
Nimmo played the ball to Jeffries who chipped in a great cross which Brass won in the air but his effort went wide.
Henderson then replaced Nimmo in 74 minutes.
Coldstream won a corner in 77 minutes which was a dangerous one which saw an almighty scramble in the 6 yard box before Binnie cleared.
In 80 minutes Downie replaced Binnie and McConnell came on for Jeffries.
In 85 minutes the Brox wrapped up the win with Downie finding McConnell with a pass he played the ball on to BRASS who held his man off before firing in a shot low and hard to the right corner of the net.
In 89 minutes the home side should have added a consolation goal when Freire crossed brilliantly to the back post on the right but Brigg’s shot was kept out well by Blair.
In the final minute Gillen played the ball to Brass who this time cracked his shot high and wide.

Broxburn and Edinburgh South contested a friendly on a murky night at the Albyn to give those returning from injury and illness some game time.
The Brox showed 8 changes from Saturday’s incredible 5-5 draw against Dundonald. Donoghue, Newall, G Donaldson, Wright, Douglas, Downie, Sinclair, Henderson and Churchill coming in for Blair, Orru, Gillen, R.Nimmo, Binnie, Jeffries, B.Donaldson and Gray.
In the 3rd minute Clark and Henderson worked a neat move down the right with the latter getting to the bye line but Brox loanee Hamilton saved well at his near post.
Both full backs for Edinburgh South were prominent in their first real attack in the 6th minute the move going from left to right with the right back firing high over the bar.
In the 7th minute the best chance of the game so far from a corner on the left Wright rose high at the back post heading back across the goal to Douglas who headed over from point blank range.
The next minute produced another home chance Newall going on a run and his cross was headed clear by the visitors centre half falling to Sinclair whose shot flew wide.
Newall was again on a rampaging run down the right in 12 minutes with his cross hitting the inside of the post and cleared by the Edinburgh South right back for a corner. Wright again won the header at the back post from the corner but this time his effort takes a deflection back to keeper Hamilton.
The Brox continued to knock the ball around well Sinclair sliding the ball through to Churchill at the edge of the penalty box where he struck a shot which Hamilton had to look lively to tip round the post.
Churchill and Newall were combining well on the right flank with the full back getting in a shot which flew over the bar.
The chances continued to come and go for the Brox Downie playing a great through ball to Douglas who was in on the right side he struck his shot well but Hamilton did well to dive to his right to save.
The pressure had to tell and eventually did in the 20th minute Newall again playing a strong part in the lead up and Churchill with Edinburgh South not able to clear their lines DOUGLAS headed home from 3 yards out.
G.Donaldson had to go off injured in 22 minutes Sayers replaced him.
The visitors had some possession in the home half in 27 minutes the left back swinging in a good cross which Wright headed clear.
Edinburgh South continued to grow into the game the left back playing a nice pass to the centre forward who got in their first meaningful shot which deflected past the post for a corner. Sayers cleared the corner.
In 34 minutes the Brox broke out quickly Sinclair sent Douglas clear he unselfishly squared the ball to Downie 18 yards out but he slid his shot past the post.
Then against the run of play Edinburgh South equalise Clark gave possession away the ball was played into the centre forward who steadied himself before shooting the ball past Donoghue and into the net.
In 44 minutes Churchill played a great flighted ball down the wing for Newall who crossed well but their were no red shirts on hand to finish.
In first half injury time a Churchill corner fell to Wright but he rushed his shot when he had time and it went well over the bar.
HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 1 Edinburgh South
Changes at half time saw R.Nimmo replace Henderson and Gray for Douglas.
In 46 minutes Nimmo made an immediate impact on the left playing a neat pass to Churchill who hit a strong shot just wide of the left post.
Churchill went closer in the following minute hitting the bar with a header from a Newall cross.
In 53 minutes it was the visitors turn to hit the woodwork the ball headed clear by Churchill fell to the left back 25 yards out with his effort rattling the bar.
A Nimmo cut back was just out of reach of Downie as the game opened up.
Gray was next to try his luck from the right but his shot just cleared the bar.
In 57 minutes Brass replaced Downie.
In 58 minutes a Gray cross was blocked for a corner. From the resulting kick Gray clipped in a great ball which WRIGHT headed into the net.
Nimmo was looking lively on the left cutting inside and shooting but Hamilton saved well.
The Brox stretched there lead in 66 minutes Brass setting up CHURCHILL whose shot flew into the net to make it 3-1. Time 66 minutes.
Churchill was then replaced by a Trialist No 8 in 69 minutes.
In 75 minutes Edinburgh South pulled a goal back the right back playing in a ball which was neatly finished.
In 78 minutes Clark was replaced by Trialist No. 21.
The Brox set up another decent chance a minute later Nimmo played the ball into Brass who couldn’t provide the finish.
In a very open game now Edinburgh South forced Donoghue into a save to preserve the home lead.
A Gray free kick hit the defensive wall in 82 minutes the ball is then fired in from the right which one of the Edinburgh South defenders almost diverted into his own net but Hamilton is alert to the error and saved.
Both sides continued to try and press forward in the closing minutes with Brass being presented with the clearest opportunity by Gray in injury time but the striker skied the ball over the bar.
