League Cup Last 16 – Broxburn Athletic V Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts – 30/04/2022

After a glorious morning of sunshine the rain clouds rolled into the Albyn for the league Cup last 16 tie with Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts. Broxburn were unchanged from Tuesday’s battling draw at Penicuik.

Inverkeithing showed one change in their starting line up from last Saturdays win at Tynecastle McMurchie replacing Murray.

The first opportunity in the game came in the 2nd minute when Barker was brought down 25 yards from goal. Mair took the free kick but the Inverkeithing defence cleared easily.

The visitors got their first effort on goal in 6 minutes from a long throw on the left McMurchie back headed towards goal but straight to Donoghue.

Inverkeithing were playing at a very high tempo making it difficult for Broxburn to settle.

The home side were looking lively down their right with Barker and Gillen showing up well, in 12 minutes Gillen’s cross was well defended for a corner with Binnie waiting to pounce.

From the corner by Greenhill, Nimmo rose well at the back post to win the header with his effort just clearing the bar.

In 17 minutes Greenhill was booked for a foul on McMurchie.

A nice interchange between McMurchie and Kelly in 24 minutes ended with the latter curling his shot just wide of target.

In 29 minutes the first real chance of the game fell to the visitors Strang robbing Gillen playing inside from the left to McMurchie but he shot over when well placed.

In 31 minutes a good Binnie cross was met by the head of Barker but he headed straight at Gibb in the Swifts goal.

In 36 minutes Jackson was booked for a foul on Barker. Ross Nimmo replaced the injured Dan Nimmo.

In 43 minutes Broxburn fashioned a decent opportunity Greenhill playing Ross Nimmo in on the right side but his chip shot went over the bar.

Half Time: Broxburn Athletic 0 – 0 Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts

The second half continued the same pattern with both teams cancelling each other out.

In 52 minutes Tait replaced Binnie for the Brox.

In 54 minutes a Simpson pass split the Brox defence with Spence in on Donoghue who did brilliantly to dive at the feet of the striker to save with Murray completing the clearance.

On the hour it was Broxburn’s turn to go close Tait putting over a great ball from the left finding the head of Brass which looked to be heading in until Gibb managed to claw the ball away from goal.

The game was opening up a bit now with Liddell lobbing a cross to the back post where Spence got in a looping header which was brilliantly tipped over by Donoghue.

The Swifts made 2 changes in 64 minutes McMurchie and Simpson going off Morris and Murray on.

In 67 minutes Broxburn broke out quickly from the back Greenhill feeding Tait down the left but his cross was disappointing and straight to Gibb.

Murray was booked for Broxburn in 73 minutes.

Once again Broxburn broke out well from the back but the final ball this time from Mair was poor going straight out of play.

In 77 minutes good play down the right from Ross Nimmo and Gillen with the cross from the latter not beating the first man.

In 81 minutes Liddell was booked for the Swifts.

From a loose Greenhill pass Scullion strode forward for the Swifts and it needed evasive action from Gillen to concede a corner.

There were further changes for both sides Greenhill off and Newall on for Broxburn, Jackson and Hynd off Macdonald and Brough on.

Broxburn continued to press Nimmo getting off a shot from the right which Gibb saved, the keeper also did well moments later to beat away a Gillen cross.

The home sides persistence finally paid off from a Scullion error Nimmo fed the ball to Gillen whose cross found BARKER unmarked and he slotted the ball into the net in 88 minutes.

With Inverkeithing pressing forward they left plenty gaps to be exploited but Broxburn failed to take their chances to put the game to bed Nimmo and Newall thwarted by Gibb.

Nicol was also booked for Broxburn.

Not the prettiest of games to watch but the result a huge one for Broxburn as they advance to the League Cup quarter finals to face Whitehill Welfare. A real gritty performance following a battling performance at Penicuik in midweek. Next week it’s a trip to Newtongrange Star in the league.

Coldstream v Broxburn Athletic

ATTENDANCE 110

Broxburn made the trip to the Border with a very depleted squad with injuries cutting the squad to bare minimal . Broxburn started well and forced a corner early doors but nothing came of it . Football was hard to play on a bobbly pitch and the game was a scrappy affair . Gary Brass came close on ten minutes after good play down the right saw the big striker try to turn his shot into the net but never got the pace on it he wanted and the keeper gathered easily . The am player saw a shot blocked and cleared on 18 minutes . The opening goal came from unexpected source when Donaldson and Newall played down the left with DANIEL NIMMO on a run up front got on the end of it and sent the ball high into the net from just inside the box . The only other close thing in the half was when a ball in from a corner for Broxburn saw a Barker effort come of the line .

The second half started well and Harrison saw a header from a corner well saved . Coldstream then had their best spell in the match putting some pressure on the visitors and indeed had the ball in the net but was ruled off for offside . The visitors got back into the game with a reshaped formation and were back in control of the game A bad throw out from Elliot Turnbull in the home goal went straight to Barker who played ANDREW MAIR  through on goal into the box before unleashing a unstoppable shot past the big keeper . Coldstream were not out of it and could have got back in the game when a ball in from the right found Kieran Bullen at the back but his header was easily saved by Donoghue  Andy Mair had a couple of chances to add to the score line but one was blocked and cleared and the other well saved  . With ten minutes of the game remaining a chance to put the game to bed was given when a clear handball in the box gave Gary Brass the chance to score from the spot but Elliot Turnbull made amends for his howler at the second goal by pulling off a great save at the expense of a corner  to keep his side still in the game .

A tough gig for the Brox but a comfortable win in the end in what was a very scrappy affair at times  .We move on to next weeks third game of four against Fauldhouse United at home .

BROXBURN ATHLETIC V CRAIGROYSTON

Attendance 125

League Cup Group E – Broxburn Athletic v Craigroyston – 12/03/2022
Broxburn got their League Cup campaign underway at a bright and breezy Albyn Park with Conference A side Craigroyston providing the opposition. The Brox made 4 changes to the side which defeated Musselburgh, Dan Nimmo for Murray, Nicol for Greenhill, Ross Nimmo for Binnie and Mair for Brass.
Craigroyston had a heavy reverse at home to Leith in their opening League Cup game by 7-0 so were out to make amends.
Broxburn were on the front foot from the off but it was the visitors who almost took the lead in 6 minutes on a breakaway Gary Mair was given a chance when Donoghue hesitated when coming out of his goal but his lob however did go over the keeper but didn’t threaten the goal.
In 8 minutes from a corner Mair for the Brox fashioned a shooting chance which was gathered easily by keeper Sanchez at his near post.
Mair then made a great run down the right beating defenders but his final touch gave Sanchez a chance to save which he got down to well.
The game was being played almost entirely in the visitors half with an endless stream of corners. From a short corner between Ross Nimmo and Mair, the latters cross to the back post found Dan Nimmo who controlled well but couldn’t get enough on his shot to beat Sanchez.
The corners continued with efforts from Mair and Ross Nimmo off target.
In 18 minutes Gillen was set up nicely by Ross Nimmo and Barker, he caught his shot well but it just went wide of the left hand post.
The Brox should have gone ahead in 19 minutes Tait sent Donaldson clear on the left, the full back steadied himself but shot wide when others were available for a cut back.
In 23 minutes Ross Nimmo had a great chance after being put through but seemed caught in 2 minds between a shot or a cross in the end his effort was neither.
Chances continued to come and go another gilt edged chance this time falling to Tait, Mair and Ross Nimmo were once again the creators but same result shot was dragged wide of target.
Craigroyston did manage a rare foray forward in 31 minutes with Dylan Tait shooting well wide.
In 35 minutes the breakthrough was finally made Ross Nimmo playing a defence splitting pass to BARKER who fired the ball into the net.
It was nearly 2-0 in 37 minutes Tait playing a nice ball inside to Nicol who struck the ball well but saw his effort hit the post.
In 40 minutes from a Nimmo corner DONALDSON made a great run to fire in a neat finish to put Broxburn two to the good.

Great interplay between Nimmo and Gillen and a perfect cutback for MAIR to apply the finish to make it three in 43 minutes.
Broxburn were rampant now and Ross Nimmo sent Tait into the clear he was brought down in the penalty box. From the penalty ROSS NIMMO converted.
In an incredible end to the half NICOL volleyed in a fifth goal from a corner right on half time.
Half Time: Broxburn Athletic 5 – 0 Craigroyston
Broxburn made 2 changes at half time Cowley and Beagley replacing Tait and Gillen.
Broxburn should have added to their total courtesy of another penalty Ross Nimmo being brought down. This time he blazed his penalty kick over the bar.
In 54 minutes Donaldson did well down the left to cut the ball to Nimmo who took his shot with his left foot but it was a tame effort straight at Sanchez.
In 56 minutes Kerr replaced Afedzie-Hayford for the visitors .
Great defending from Bjarnason prevented Donaldson getting in on goal as the visitors struggled to contain the eager home side.
In 62 minutes Murray replaced Newall.
Then in 63 minutes right out of the blue the ball was played forward to JACK and he hit an incredible shot from 35 yards high on the volley which dipped under the bar and over Donoghue into the Broxburn net.
The Brox should have restored their 5 goal advantage in the following minute but Barker shot over when well positioned.
The sixth goal was only temporarily delayed ROSS NIMMO being brought down again in the box and this time he dispatched the ball past Sanchez for a 6-1 lead. Time 65 minutes.
From a Nimmo free kick on the left he sent in a great ball which eluded both Donaldson and Harrison with the visitors defence posted missing.
It was seventh heaven for Broxburn in 70 minutes a great move down the right a forward ball expertly flicked on by Nimmo sent MAIR into the clear and he shot low into the bottom corner of Sanchez net.
Burke and Pettigrew replaced Brennan and Cowling for Craigroyston.
The Craigroyston defence was breached again Nimmo again finding MAIR who provided a nice touch to finish and complete his hat trick. Time 72 minutes.
To Craigroyston’s credit they continued to try and go forward and were rewarded from a corner in 74 minutes Bolochoweckyj being left on his own at the back post and he cracked the ball into the home net to make it 8-2.
The scoring continued in 81 minutes from a Nimmo corner HARRISON rose powerfully to get a great header which bulleted into the net.
Beagley made good ground down the right before cutting inside and passing to Mair whose shot was deflected over the bar.
With Craigroyston tiring Barker and Donaldson both went close to adding to the home score.
Double digits were achieved with Nimmo again involved finding Beagley on the right his cutback was perfect for BARKER to shoot home number ten.
An excellent start to Broxburn’s League Cup campaign overwhelming a plucky Craigroyston side. Great to see the goals spread round a number of different players. The Brox had an incredible 40 shots! A trip to Coldstream is next up where another win will be required.
