East Of Scotland Premier League: Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts v Broxburn Athletic – 24 March 2023

 Broxburn travelled to Dalgety Bay to play Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts after last weeks encouraging 4-0 win at Musselburgh.

There were 2 changes to the Brox line up Downie for Brass and B.Donaldson for Gray.

Inverkeithing’s last competitive fixture was in the League Cup when they got the better of Whitehill Welfare 4-3 after extra time.

Broxburn had early opportunites from a corner and free kick to ask some questions of the home defence dealt with comfortably.

The first chance of the game came in 6 minutes Jeffries playing a nice through ball to Mansouri who was denied by an alert Blair at the edge of the area.

In the following minute B.Donaldson played a diagonal ball which Paterson did well to clear for a corner. Nothing came from the corner.

In 15 minutes Downie was injured Heath coming on as a sub for his debut.

Heath nearly made an immediate impact McConnell playing a ball to him where he cut inside but his effort from a tight angle flew wide right.

In 19 minutes Hynd was booked.

In 25 minutes Paterson was fouled 25 yards out Jeffries took the kick but Gillen cleared.

The Brox’s best chance yet came in 33 minutes Orru playing a great ball to Douglas 1 on 1 with Martin, the keeper came up big with a save to deny the in form striker.

In 35 minutes McConnell capitalised on a home error but didn’t advance into the box, with his back heel being inaccurate and cleared.

Broxburn won a couple of corners in succession but couldn’t find a way past the home defence.

Gillen was booked in 42 minutes.

In a half of few chances from a corner the Brox appeared to clear their lines but the ball was played back into the danger area where MARSHALL volleyed the ball high into the Brox net.

Paterson was also booked in the first half for the home side.

HALF TIME: Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts 1 – 0 Broxburn Athletic

Broxburn should have drawn level in 47 minutes Bremner playing a great ball to Orru down the left his cross was a good one but Douglas couldn’t direct his header past Martin.

In 55 minutes Broxburn won the ball in midfield Heath cut inside from the right with his shot just going past the post to the left.

A great move from the visitors McConnell getting to the bye line but Deas was on hand to clear for a corner. Bremner took the corner to the back post Wright won the header but his effort was blocked near the goal line.

In 62 minutes the ball was played across to Heath on the right he came inside his man and got a good shot off which just went past the left hand post.

Heath was having a good debut and out of luck in 64 minutes when he appeared to be brought down just outside the box.

In 70 minutes Orru played the ball to Heath who won a corner on the left. From the kick Bremner’s cross was deep Wright won the header, with a hand preventing a goal on the line from a home defender who was curiously not sent off.

DOUGLAS sent Martin the wrong way from the spot kick.

Bremner played a ball to Gillen down the right his cross was a good one finding Clark but he didn’t catch his shot correctly, Martin making the save.

Williamson came on for McConnell in 76 minutes.

With 10 minutes the killer blow was struck Inverkeithing breaking down the left McMurchie playing in for MANSOURI who dispatched his shot low into the bottom corner of Blair’s net.

There were more claims for a penalty in 82 minutes Clark feeding Orru who came in from the left and seemed to be clearly fouled but the referee waved play on.

Straight down the other end and Kelly had a shooting chance from the left from a tight angle but he fired wide right.

From a mistake by D.Nimmo and Bremner Mansouri got free on the left but he couldn’t direct his effort on target.

In 89 minutes Jeffries fouled Gillen 25 yards out on the right Heath took the free kick which was on the money but well defended for a corner. Bremner took the kick but D.Nimmo couldn’t direct his effort on target.
