East Of Scotland Premier League: Tynecastle v Broxburn Athletic – 3 December 2022

Broxburn got back into competitive action with a league visit to Meggatland to face Tynecastle.

Broxburn made 3 changes from the side which had won at Coldstream in the Challenge Cup 2 weeks ago Harrison, Greenhill and Downie replacing Sayers, Jeffries and R.Nimmo.

Tynecastle were also out of action last week making 4 changes from the side who lost 2-1 to Dunipace after extra time in the Challenge Cup. O’Donnell, Ponton, Chesser and Thompson started in place of Finnan, Mackie, Greig and McNab.

In the 2nd minute Harrison played a long ball forward to Binnie down the right which he did well to chase down he put in a great cross but it was beyond Downie.

Two minutes later and the home side had a presentable chance when Greenhill was caught in possession Cameron set up Frankland for a shot 25 yards out which he hit well forcing Blair into tipping the ball over the bar.

From the corner taken by Weir no one in the Broxburn defence took responsibility and the ball was scrambled out for another corner which Harrison cleared.

In the 10th minute the Brox took the lead Gillen played the ball wide to Orru on the left he advanced and put over a great cross which DOWNIE controlled and slipped the ball into the right corner of the net.

The visitors had their tails up at this point in 13 minutes Clark doing really well to win the ball on the right bye line and force a cross which spiralled up in the air Gillen won the ball and managed to get in a shot which deflected wide left.

Six minutes on and Orru played a fine ball down the left where Gillen dispossessed O’Donnell he cut inside but when other options were available he chose to shoot but straight to keeper Jackson.

In 21 minutes Downie did well to beat Reekie but his cross was a poor one Binnie retrieved and fired in a great shot which Jackson had to tip over.

Newall was booked in 22 minutes for what looked like an accidental handball. Ponton played in the free kick from the left with Frankland going in with a high boot and fouling Harrison.

Orru played in another great ball from the left Downie got a touch to the full backs cross but there wasn’t enough power on the effort to trouble Jackson.

Some nice combination passing between Frankland and Cameron for the home side saw the latter win a corner. Weir’s corner was claimed by Blair.

Tynecastle were having their best spell O’Donnell crossing in from the right Weir then seeing his shot blocked by Wright.

Frankliand was booked in 32 minutes for persistent fouling.

Gray showed a neat bit of control in 37 minutes from a long Harrison ball he slid a great ball to Clark who found Downie but this time the striker fired well wide to the left.

Clark and Orru combined in 38 minutes with the latter getting in another top cross which Reekie got his head to with Downie right behind him ready to take advantage. The ball broke to Gray but his chipped effort is straight to Jackson.

From a Gray free kick 25 yards out in 40 minutes out he hit the defensive wall, the ball broke to Greenhill who split the defence with a great ball to Newall on the right but the full back disappointingly overhit his cross.

HALF TIME: Tynecastle 0-1 Broxburn Athletic

  1. Nimmo replaced Gray at the break.

In 53 minutes Orru went on a great run from his own half and played a great ball to Downie he gets beaten to the ball by Jardine.

Tynecastle then created a decent chance down the left with Chesser putting in a great cross along the 6 yard box but no one in maroon could get anywhere near the ball to knock it into the net.

In 58 minutes Harrison bravely won a challenge which set R.Nimmo off on a lung busting run which took him into the home penalty box where his cross was blocked for a corner which didn’t come to anything.

Substitutions followed Clark and Downie replaced with McConnell and Douglas. Harrison couldn’t continue after treatment B.Donaldson coming on.

In 61 minutes Greenhill took a corner on the right which Wright won and his header was going in until a defender headed clear from the line.

Down the other end and Frankland hit a strong shot which hit a Broxburn defender only a couple of yards away with huge shouts for a penalty turned down.

In 62 minutes Finnan and Johnston were introduced for Frankland and Thompson.

Broxburn broke down the right Binnie played the ball to R.Nimmo whose cross was right on Douglas’s head at the back post but he diverted his effort with his head wide.

In 70 minutes R.Nimmo was booked for diving.

Henderson then replaced Binnie.

Tynecastle then passed up a glorious opportunity in 73 minutes Ponton crossed in from the left substitute Johnston appeared to have the goal at his mercy but his header hit the left hand post and was scrambled clear.

This stung Broxburn into a response Douglas crossed from the right but was too strong for R.Nimmo who did well to retrieve and play to Henderson who blazed the ball well over the bar.

From a long ball by Jardine, Kennedy and Cameron got free on the right the Brox cleared unconvincingly with Cameron swinging the ball back in Blair did well to save but CHESSER was left with the simple task of putting the ball into the net. Time 79 minutes.

The game then became stretched with both sides going for a winner but both unable to find the killer final ball.

In 87 minutes R.Nimmo clipped in a ball from the left which was part cleared Douglas played back in but Gillen had to stretch to get in a shot which was too high and over the bar.

In 89 minutes Ponton was booked for a foul on Henderson.

A corner was then forced which R.Nimmo took it was right on the money but somehow McConnell managed to put over the bar from no more than 3 yards out.

In 93 minutes McConnell was booked.
